Review, Guest Post, and Giveaway: Not Dead Yet by Traci Hunter Abramson

About the Book

Book: Not Dead Yet

Author: Traci Hunter Abramson

Genre: Suspense

Release date: June 13, 2022

Cassidy Edgemont has been dead for four years. At least, that is what the world has been led to believe. After becoming unwittingly entangled in a group called the Coalition, known for using fake news to generate political unrest in the United States, Cas was offered a devastating choice: stage her own death and join her rescuers, the guardians, or risk the wrath of the organization she betrayed. She chose death.

As an invisible government operative, Cas has been living in Paris with no complications—until her family pays an unexpected visit to the European city, changing everything. They think Cas is dead, and she has to keep it that way. But when a bomb is detonated nearby and fake news incites riots in the city, Cas recognizes the mark of the Coalition.

Donovan, a fellow guardian, is summoned to join her in Paris to attempt to untangle the intricate web linking Cas’s past with the recent bombings. But as the threat level escalates, Cas must again make an impossible decision: face possible exposure to her family in her race to uncover the truth or risk the loss of innocent lives.

My Thoughts:

This is the first Guardian novel that I have read, and it was pretty unputdownable. I found the whole concept of the Guardians very intriguing.  It seems much more secretive than the government agencies like the CIA and I found that in a way, the guardians don't have anything personal to lose but their lives. Why? Well because these are agents that are already thought to be dead by all who know them. So, kind of like the witness protection but they have turned into agents, or guardians.

Cas has been dead for four years. She knows what she is doing for the agency is worthwhile on a global scale, but she misses her parents and sister. However, she does get to be stationed in Paris, so that is a bonus. Until her family makes a trip there and she is basically housebound to not blow her cover. But maybe someone already knows that she is alive that shouldn't. That is really bad news as the ones who want her dead could come after her again.

To help her stay hidden and safe and to continue investigating another guardian, Donavan, is pulled from Africa to help her. Like Cas, he is dead to all he knows and loves. He is also enjoying all that Europe has to offer especially in its cuisine. So, Donavan and Cas are now partners of sort, already in the same boat but then feelings begin to develop that goes much deeper.

I thought this was a very unique suspense novel. I am interested in the whole guardian concept and how it changes the characters into the heroes, or guardians that they become. The atmosphere of Europe was a nice change of pace as well.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Traci

Paris anyone? After years of restricted travel and various COVID-related challenges, I needed to spend some time back in a city I love, even if it was only as part of my fictional world. Add in my years working with the CIA, and Not Dead Yet was born.

While Not Dead Yet is technically the sixth book in the guardian series, all of these books are written as stand-alone novels, which simply visit some characters from previous novels and sometimes introduce characters that will be featured in the stories to come.

Not Dead Yet was particularly enjoyable to write, not only because it gave me an excuse to revisit my photos and memories from my most recent trips to Paris, but also because of the parallels that naturally occurred with my own life.

Cas, the main character, is the first female guardian in my fictional top-secret program of government operatives who strive to serve and protect U.S. intelligence and military personnel. When I worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, I often attended meetings in which I was the only woman in the room. Respect and loyalty had to be earned regardless of gender, and I was fortunate to work with some amazing individuals over the years. Some of those treasured work relationships come through within the pages of this book.

Another similarity to my own background is Cas’s family dynamics. She has her parents and a younger sister, which mirrors my own early childhood. Her family is often in the public eye because of their association with the media industry. While I didn’t come from the extreme wealth and fame as my character did, I do remember well what it was like to have a mom on television (The Home Hunter in Phoenix, AZ) and to have a sister working in the entertainment industry. While my sister (Tiffany Hunter) has taken over The Home Hunter in recent years, a few of her earlier positions included serving as the backstage coordinator for the Grammys as well as working as Bill Murray’s personal assistant.

Not Dead Yet blends many experiences from my past with the events of the present and the ever-present question of What if? I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Review, Guest Post, and Giveaway: Matters of the Heart by Heidi Gray McGill

About the Book

Book: Matters of the Heart

Author: Heidi Gray McGill

Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

Release date: July 15, 2022

When those experiencing the same fate she endured show up at her doorstep…

Katie determines to be their champion, no matter the fallout.

Will the man who fought for the other side also fight for her?

Unconventional Katie empathizes with the widows and orphans of the Civil War, searching for a place to call home in Shumard Oak Bend. But with no one to help her, she’ll need to do it secretly, a challenge she readily accepts. She’s taken charge before, and she’ll do it again, no matter who she has to outwit to get the job done.

He vowed to be his own man and stop doing everyone else’s bidding. But he follows orders when a pair of emerald green eyes, blazing red hair, and freckles that dance on the bridge of a pert nose conscript him to duty. Be his own man. Who is he kidding? Skunks don’t change their stripes. They leave disasters in their wake wherever they go, just like him.

Overcoming personal obstacles and finding your true self doesn’t mean going it alone. Yet the answer isn’t always in the one you seek.

My Thoughts:

I cannot imagine coming to another country to start over due to a less than pleasant life in your home country. But that is just what Katie does as she flees Ireland and her life of poverty and abuse there, especially after the death of her beloved mother. Now living and working at her aunt's boarding house, Katie has a chance to start over and she knows how blessed she is. So much so that her heart goes out to helping the widows and orphans of her new hometown.

Hans has come from Finland to end up fighting in America's Civil War. He deals with nightmares from the atrocities that he had to deal with. He just wants to be his own man and to get out from underneath everyone's thumb. When he and Katie meet, sparks fly, both good and bad.

Matters of the Heart is their story, of how these two immigrants grow in their new home, let go of their insecurities, reach out to help others, and come to a place where they have an understanding with one another. Theirs is not an easy road, but we the readers can really see the growth that takes place in their lives and how they stand up and fight for what is right. And most importantly the faith that develops in their lives, especially Hans redemption story.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Heidi

Where did the idea for Matters of the Heart originate?

Before I was an author, I was the founder and director of an English as a Second Language ministry. The program touched the lives of students from 35 different countries. Regardless of culture, religion, language, or age, I found a substantial similarity in these students—they all wanted to improve their lot in life and that of their children.

Stories abounded of walks across deserts, financial hardships, desperate attempts to explain emergencies to medical professionals or law enforcement, failed verbal connections with schoolteachers, and an inability to obtain work because of their lack of language skills. Prejudice and distrust blocked them, culture shock took them outside their comfort zones, and the urgent need to survive made them scramble to dig deep inside and find creative ways to secure shelter and put food on their tables.

It wasn’t that these immigrants weren’t capable of achieving success. In their home countries, vocations varied from chemist and biologist with PhDs, to teachers, lawyers, and medical professionals. Others came from poverty and had little education but were not afraid of hard work, long hours, and low pay. They were tenacious, and they worked with relentless determination and a bullheaded resolve to achieve their goals. They relied on each other and soaked in everything around them in their desire to assimilate into the American culture and find a new place to belong.

Immigrants in the late 1800s were not much different. Individuals came to improve their lot in life and be a part of the greatest country in the world. In Matters of the Heart, Hans Korhonen left Finland with his brothers to take advantage of the land grants. Together, they worked to establish a farm large enough to sustain four families and support troops during the Civil War. Yet, in their desire to belong and give back to our great nation, Hans’s idyllic life changed through his service as a Union soldier.

Kathleen Murphy, or Katie, came to the United States to escape a life of extreme poverty and abuse in Ireland. Working in her aunt and uncle’s boarding offered more than a job. It provided the love and support of a family. Katie rose from her previous station and started fresh with hope on the horizon. She found a source of ministry that gave her life a purpose she’d not had before.

My association with my former ESL students helped me develop the characters in this book into individuals with which readers can identify.

Join Katie and Hans as they establish themselves in their new home of Shumard Oak Bend.

Review: The Last Way Home by Liz Johnson

About:

Every broken thing can be made beautiful again

When Eli Ross left Prince Edward Island to join the NHL, he left a broken family behind. More than a decade later, he's headed home to an uncertain welcome. He wants to make things right with the family he wronged, but his mom's business partner isn't making it easy. To top it off, the coaching job he takes turns out to be more of a challenge than he anticipated.

For years, Violet Donaghy has put everything she had into making Eli's mom's ceramics shop a success, and she's not eager to forgive the man who hurt the family that's taken her in as one of their own. But when the kiln at the shop starts a fire that nearly destroys the studio, she'll need all the help she can get to save the business and their summer income.

When Eli and Violet come together, they must find the strength to mend the broken pieces of the Ross family--and to heal their own hearts.

My Thoughts:

The prodigal son has come back home to his family. It has been a long while and Eli Ross has not had much contact with his mother or two brothers. Now he is back, broke and even in more trouble than anybody realizes.

Violet Donaghy is like the daughter Eli's mom has never had. Hiding from her own failures, secrets, and family, Violet had come to Prince Edward Island to start anew and fresh. And this time she has chosen the Ross family. Mama Potts (Ross) not only treats her as a daughter but has gone into business with her running a ceramic shop. Unfortunately, the day Eli arrives, the shop catches on fire and they are in a financial mess.

Eli is trying to prove that he has changed, that he is not the jerk that left his family when they needed him most. Violet is determined to not only keep Eli at arm's length but also to keep a close watch on him. She is bound and determined to make sure he will not hurt Mama Potts anymore. However, his mother loves him and is willing to take him in no matter what.  How can you love like that? Well, both Eli and Violet have a lot to learn not only about a parent's love but God's love as well. Along the way, they just might be falling in love with each other too.

This was another enjoyable story about the Ross family, and I look forward to Levi's story.

Review, Guest Post, and Giveaway: Grace on the Mountain Trail by Misty M. Beller

About the Book

Book: Grace in the Mountain Trail

Author: Misty M. Beller

Genre:Christian Historical Romance

Release date: July 12, 2022

This epic journey is her last hope to find her lost brother—the only family she has left.

When Lola Carson’s father died, his last words spoke of a half-brother she’d never known about. And now, to claim her own inheritance and come to terms with her father’s secret life, she must find this mysterious man—whose last known whereabouts are somewhere west of the wild Rocky Mountains. After hiring family friends to accompany her on the trek, she sets out for a wilderness few white women have ever seen. She doesn’t expect the majestic peaks to captivate her so, nor the half-dead brave they find on one of the slopes.

White Owl left his village and his broken heart behind when he set out for a fresh start. His newfound faith is the one anchor in his life. He’s desperate to learn more about the God he’s committed to follow and become an interpreter for the missionaries who led him to faith. But he barely starts his journey when a hunting accident nearly kills him. The woman who discovers him in the midst of his fevered delirium seems to be a gift from above.

But the more White Owl learns about Lola’s companions and her dangerous quest, the more he realizes his own calling is clear—to take her safely to her brother. The question is, will he have to sacrifice more than his heart to accomplish that goal?

From a USA Today bestselling author comes another epic journey through breathless landscapes and adventure so intense, lives will never be the same.

My Thoughts:

The title of this story was so apropos. This is White Owl's story and his search for more of the Creator Father's truth. But what he has heard has really sunk in especially in how he treats his enemy.

Lola has lost her father and has found out some devastating news. Now, along with her father's longtime friend and his son, Lola has set out to find the half-brother she never knew existed. She must do this to secure her inheritance. Along the journey they come across White Owl who is severely injured. They stay and help.

After White Owl gets better, they continue on a most treacherous journey through the wilds of the Rocky Mountains, fighting nature and unfortunately man. Who can Lola trust when it seems someone is bent on causing her harm?

This was another adventurous tale of family and romance and a vividly told atmosphere that put me smack dab in the middle of the story with these travelers.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Review: Love and the Dream Come True by Tammy L. Gray

About:

Their faith will face its toughest test yet.

Four years after getting the biggest break of his life, Cameron Lee's music career has taken a nosedive, leaving him two options: become a sellout or give up on his lifelong dream. He reluctantly returns home for his sister's wedding, hoping to avoid his past and find his love for music again.

Single mom Lexie Walters has suffered her fair share of tragedies and setbacks, but she has finally scraped together the money to achieve her dream of going into business with her cousin as an interior designer. When Lexie's life is at an all-time high, she runs into her teenage crush, Cameron Lee.

Lost in the emotional turmoil of failure, Cameron is immediately drawn to Lexie and her infectious smile and optimistic spirit. Moreover, he adores her mouthy, no-holds-barred daughter. But fantasies only last so long, and soon Lexie and Cameron must face the real world, the one fraught with heartbreak, disappointment, and questions that sometimes can only be answered by a leap of faith.

My Thoughts:

Now, we have Cameron's story and I have been looking forward to his. After his devastation with Darcy four years earlier, Cameron has come back home for his little sister's wedding. He is hurting over the past and in his career. He dreads seeing Darcy, especially now that she and Bryson have started their family. It should have been him, or at least he always thought that. But love had other plans and Cameron just hasn't met the right one yet.

Well, technically he did. He has known Lexie since she was a kid, but now she is all grown up. And she has a daughter. Lexie also is still carrying around the huge crush that she has always felt for Cameron. Will he see her as more than his sister's friend? You bet he does, and then the fun, I mean the romance begins.

Cameron has matured in this story, and we can really see it as he checks himself so much more around Lexie then he did with Darcy. I also enjoyed the descriptions of her that he had in his mind. It was so telling of where his heart was before he even realized it mentally. And Lexie, well she was getting her dream come true. The guy of her dreams has noticed her and really likes her.

They are both so mature and at the same time giddy in their relationship. I was so thrilled to see the right one for Cameron and for him to realize this was the best way all along. Now it is not all sunshine and roses for them, they do have some trials to get through along the way. Now my only question is, what about Mason?

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Review, Guest Post, and Giveaway: The Heart of the Mountains by Pepper Basham

About the Book

Book: The Heart of the Mountains

Author: Pepper Basham

Genre: Christian Fiction / Romance

Release date: July 1, 2022

Can their hearts overcome the darkness of the mountains?

To escape a forced marriage, Cora Taylor travels from England to the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of her brother, who is working as a teacher in a mission school. She hopes to find a place where her nursing skills and independent ideas will be accepted and appreciated, but nothing prepares her for the wild mixture of isolation, community, brokenness, and hope within these mountains…or in the person of Jeb McAdams.

Returning from the devastation of World War 1 emotionally damaged, Jeb McAdams struggles against the rampant mountain alcoholism to soothe his nightmares. It’s easy to hide within the mountains, or it was, before Cora Taylor arrived. Now, she seems to show up at every turn, bringing her modern ideas, curiosity, and beautiful eyes with her.

Bound by their shared war history, the pair develop an unlikely friendship, which unexpectedly hints to something more. But when Cora’s desire to help the women of the mountains crosses an unspoken line, will Jeb be able to protect this feisty flatlander from the wrath of the mountain men or will he end up losing much more than his heart?

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

This was such a satisfying story. Right after WWI Cora Taylor wants to recover emotionally and doesn't quite know how to go back to her normal life, or even if she can. Then her father determines to marry her off to a man who is not a good man but good for her father's wealth. So, she runs away from England to try and find her brother and uncle in the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the moment she gets there, her life will never be the same.

Within the first few pages I felt for poor Cora. She really had nowhere to go, and she met danger left and right. I liked her character strengths as she showed she was going to adapt to her new home, for the time being, and do her best to help others with her nursing skills. No matter what.

Thankfully she had a right handsome, strong man who seemed to come to her rescue all the time. And not only that, but they also shared similar wounds from the war. Jeb McAdams has come back from the war with nightmares. He does not want to go the way of his father with strong drink, instead he pours himself into building and creating with his woodworking. He is quite good at it too. But when Cora drops into his life, literally and figuratively, he knows there is no going back.

I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of the landscape and how very real the dangers were both to the natives and the outsiders. The way they lived, their culture, lifestyle, even clans was very foreign to Cora. However, she settled well and her and Jeb had a most swoon worthy romance.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Pepper

It’s so interesting how one idea can influence an entire series, or…how one person’s story can.

The idea for The Heart of the Mountains started in Laurel’s Dream with a hint of a family history story about a girl named Kizzie. (Someday, I hope to bring Kizzie’s story to the pages of a book). From there, the idea began to grow out of a love for my Appalachian culture into a series of books which highlighted (and fictionalized) stories from my family history.

The main story in The Heart of the Mountains is about Jeb and Cora, two different people with similar servant hearts, but the secondary story that touched me so much was the one based on my great grandfather’s life. I write about it in the Author’s Note at the end of the novel, so I won’t go into detail about it. However, what I loved getting to do is bring the truth of God’s redemption in my great grandfather’s life…to life again.

I never knew “Papa Rat”. I only knew the stories handed down to me by my granny and my mama, but in writing this story, I feel as though I had a tiny opportunity to “meet” him in these pages. He was a gruff mountain man with a broken past which led him to make a whole lot of broken choices, but his story is incredibly encouraging, because it points to the God of broken people. My great grandpa wasn’t left in his brokenness, but, after years of running away from God, he would later recount that God pursued him. The beauty of Sam McAdams’ journey in The Heart of the Mountains is only a little glimpse into what I imagine my great grandpa’s redemption story looked like.

Because my great grandpa was forever changed when Jesus saved him (as any of us should be).

I think that’s what my granny and her siblings (and even “Papa Rat” himself) would want most -that his story would point to Jesus. I hope that’s what you see when you read about Sam McAdams in The Heart of the Mountains.

Have you ever read a book based on family history? One of my favorites is Catherine Marshall’s Christy.

Epic cover reveal: Embrace of Shadows by Jes Drew

So today I have the privilege of showing you the cover of a story that I am really excited to dive into this fall! Really excited. Are you ready?

First, what is it about?

She’s a mortal with no memories.
As her fae liege, he knows only that he must protect her.
But is he her hero . . . or her captor?

Salma knows only her own name. She doesn’t even remember why she’s ill. Then a fae lord who claims he knows her snatches her back to his manor, and she learns that some things more sinister than death. Like the Court of Dusk where everyone seems to know more about her than she does and nightfall is a deadly affair.

Adom’s book of truth tells him that the woman he doesn’t recognize is a vital member of his household. But the Manor keeps its secrets well, even from its own master. And even the Shadows seem to want the beautiful, mortal nuisance he has pledged to protect.

As the threat of an invasion from night itself continues to mount, Adom knows there will be consequences if he can’t protect her. And Salma wonders if she can trust him to protect her from himself. Because sometimes Adom isn't the begrudging, aloof fae he appears to be. Sometimes he's someone— or perhaps something— else.

The beginning of a haunting, slow-burn, closed-door fae romance with elements of Beauty & the Beast, Hades & Persephone, and Egyptian mythology. Perfect for fans of Sylvia Mercedes, Tara Grayce, and Emma Ham.

Now the magnificent cover:

From the Author:

I wrote this book off the cover, which I saw and had to have. I plotted it and its sequel (and planned the last two books) in a haze Labor Day weekend. I wrote it around the finals of my master’s program, and during these last few weeks of freedom from school.

To be perfectly honest, as I started drafting it, I expected the normal loathing that hits on a second draft. But it didn’t come this time, and I have to say I genuinely love where this story is right now (and I know I’ll love it more when my editor is done with it!).

I can’t wait to share it with you all come September 24th!
