My Thoughts:

This is a delightful collection of eight novellas from different authors that take place at different times in history, but all in the same place, Surrey, England. Not only do we get to plant ourselves there for a little bit, but we also get a sampling of each of these authors writing. I had only read one author's work before.

I found all of these stories very interesting. The way they came about in a much shorter way than a longer novel. They were filled with inspiration, some of second chances, others of dreaming new dreams when yours have been broken beyond repair.

One of my favorites was about a ballerina who lost her dream. And due to tragic events, she cannot continue on as she had. Her depression was real and when a visiting sheep farmer tries to cheer her up, she nor he can imagine the new future that awaits them.

I am also partial to the mother who is helping out with the war efforts and has taken in two evacuee children along with her own daughter. She waits patiently for her soldier husband's return. What happens when he does, and all is not what it seems?

Finding peace and tranquility when everything else is turned upside down was some of the major themes running through this collection. I enjoyed my visit to Surrey.

Wild Blue Wonder Press was established in January 2016 by Kellyn Roth for the purpose of independently publishing her historical women’s fiction series, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy. Based on a special location on her family’s property and a childhood stumbling over phrases, Kellyn chose the name to evoke feelings of wonder in a world full of dark valleys. After all, where there is snow and ice, there will be chickadees, and in the midst of the darkest woods, you can often find a cozy cabin. Hey everyone! I’m Kellyn Roth, owner of Wild Blue Wonder Press and one of the authors on the Springtime in Surrey collection. I just wanted to come on here today and talk briefly about Surrey—and specifically answer the question I’m sure many of you had in your minds when you learned that the novella collection was set in this English county: “Why Surrey?!”

As authors, we often find inspiration in the places we call home … but sometimes it’s more fun to find inspiration far afield!

The landscapes, the people, and the unique atmosphere of a location can and should shape the stories we tell. Though none of our authors are actually natives of Surrey, our stories are set there! So why?

Well, I’ll tell you.

Reason #1: There’s a Lot of History in Surrey

Surrey is a place steeped in history, with tales that date back centuries. It has links to the Magna Carta and played a heavy role in the English Civil War. A lot of historical figures came from Surrey or spent significant amounts of time there.

Quite a few of our stories are set in history, and the ones that aren’t bear some vintage link that ties them back to the “olden days.” There’s such beauty in history, and as a historical author, I love featuring stories that delve back into the past!

Reason #2: It’s Gorgeous There!

Surrey’s landscapes provide an idyllic backdrop for storytelling—our Pinterest board will tell you that much! From the rolling hills of the North Downs to the tranquil beauty of the “Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” (what a mouthful!), this county offers an abundance of scenic vistas that captivate both locals and visitors alike.

We hoped to transport our readers to a place of natural wonder and evoke a sense of serenity through the quaint settings. Some of our stories take place in the countryside—and some in villages or towns. But all of them are so atmospheric and fun!

Reason #3: All the Quaint Villages and Towns

One of the defining characteristics of Surrey is its charming villages and towns, each with its own distinct character and charm. From the cobblestone streets of Guildford to the historic market town of Farnham, these locales are brimming with personality and provide a sense of community that is often lost in larger cities.

By setting some of our stories in these close-knit communities, we hope to capture the essence of Surrey’s rural charm and the warmth of its residents. I mean, who doesn’t love a village? (I’m a fan!)

Reason #4: It’s Close to London

While Surrey is known for its rural beauty, its proximity to London makes everything a little easier for us authors. The county acts as a gateway to the capital, allowing for the infusion of city life and providing opportunities for our characters to embark on exciting adventures beyond the county’s borders … or to have them be “running away” from something, as is the case in some stories.

Though alliteration did play a role, as you may have guessed, Surrey’s draws spoke for themselves—and I’m so glad we chose this dynamic county!

My Thoughts:

What a fun set of novellas this was to read. I have been enjoying this author's other series about the Harvey girls and this does include one Harvey girl novella. All of these stories are about young women with less than circumstances trying to make their way in the world and the men who they have captured the attention of. The men were all heroes in their own right, looking out for their lovely ladies and those that are in need.

The Bridal Shop introduces us to a businesswoman, Alice, who is trying to break free from her father's scandalous past. And who does she happen to catch the eye of? But the groomsman himself at her best friend's wedding. She sees the social blocks; can he make her understand they mean nothing to him?

In Miss Beaumont's Companion Aria comes from a large immigrant Italian family. Being Millie's companion is a job she needs to help her family out. However, when she is tasked to pretending to be Millie at a masked ball to catch the eye of a certain lawyer, she cannot help but wish it was herself she could be. Can the charade that night continue with the lies and deceit that have followed? Or will Aria lose more than just her job?

And in The Becoming of Miss Blanche, Tacy is just happy with being a Harvey girl, forever if need be. But her past soon catches up to her along with a man who has been searching for her for a while. Can Tacy open her heart up again?

Again, I enjoyed each of these novellas and look forward to more stories from the author's pen.

Q: What do you love about writing historical fiction?

Grace: I absolutely love the research aspect. I love learning and discovering little known pieces of history. In that research, I love asking the great “what if” question and see where it takes me while still having to follow the guidelines set up for historical fiction.

I’m pretty certain every author started as an avid reader who dreamed of how they would change an ending or change who the heroine ended up with if they could write the book instead. (Anyone else think Theodore Laurence should have married Jo March?) It’s that ever-beautiful question of “what if” that has haunted some of my favorite stories and often drives my own stories to spark to life.

Q: Have you traveled to any places you’ve written about?

Grace: My books have been set in Chicago, many in New York, Newport, New Orleans, and Charleston, which I’ve been able to visit! My upcoming Regency Romance, To Catch a Coronet, is set in London, which I toured many years ago. After writing my Regency, I’ve added an overflowing number of places to visit in England, and even Scotland where my third book will be set.

Q: How do you incorporate faith into your storylines?

Grace: I always weave in a faith theme, or verse, into the story. My goal with this novella collection, Hearts of Gold, is to provide readers with clean entertainment while subtly pointing them to Christ. And as with all of my books, something that I am learning inevitably ends up in the story in some form or another. Even though it feels a bit vulnerable to put my personal lessons in a book, I think that it offers a level of genuineness that can bring life to the story and hope to the reader.

Q: What aspect of romance do you enjoy writing about?

Grace: Before I started writing for publication, I would be reading and get very aggravated if the heroine chose the wrong hero in my eyes and I would rewrite the ending in my head, or even set aside the book with only pages left so I didn’t mess up the ending I wanted. Writing a romance is so much fun because now I understand the “formula” if you will about the obstacles placed in the lover’s path and the beauty of when they finally are together.

Q: Please tell us about your most recent book.

Grace: To Catch a Coronet releases with Kregel Publications in May 2024! This Regency Romance has been so much fun to research and while it is a challenge to change eras from Gilded Age to Regency, I’ve loved finding new, unique ways to get my heroines into trouble that inevitably has them meeting their true hero!

My Thoughts:

Christmas Forevermore is a collection of four enchanting stories that take place during the Christmas season. If you are looking for enchanting stories taking place during the holidays or just looking for sweet romance, don’t miss this collection.

A Family Christmas by Sally Britton is a story about finding your place in the family. Cyril Grant has been estranged from his late father’s family since his mother’s remarriage. Now, years later, he and his sister are welcomed back into their father’s family, and while his sister fits in well, Cyril feels out of touch and out of place. However, his grandmother’s companion, Jane Allen, mesmerizes him, as everyone seems to love her. She is a stranger, not part of the family. How does she fit in so well? And how is she getting him to open up as well? A story of a found family.

Christmas Forevermore is a very clever retelling of A Christmas Carol. There are no ghosts in this one, but I enjoyed how author Eden pulled in the past, present, and future. Minna is not necessarily a Scrooge, but she is a character that has been through a lot of sadness. She and her three closest friends are somewhat set in their lives. They all need to have their eyes opened to see what is right before them and to start some positive changes in their lives. I really enjoyed seeing all the similarities with the original tale.

Christmas at Cranfield is about two good friends who are in love with one another. But Hannah and Samuel never seem to be able to express their feelings, especially when one or the other is bound by promises, duty, and family expectations. This is a slow-burn romance between two people who are absolutely meant to be together, but they must admit to themselves first that their happiness is worth fighting for.

A Thrill of Hope was probably the most romantic for me. Here we have two childhood acquaintances meeting up again after many years. Isabel is quite surprised to see that her escort to her aunt’s home is none other than the very serious Robert. Through a travel adventure to her aunt’s home and the bad weather, these two find themselves forced into one another’s company. Avoidance, teasing, and flirting will somehow bring these two together under the mistletoe.

My Thoughts:

Just look at this cover. It is so atmospheric, and it really pulled me into the scenery as I went along on the adventures and loves that these four ladies and their lumberjacks would experience.

I do believe I have only read one of these authors, though I have been eyeing up some of the author's other stories. Author Musch has especially been on my radar for a while now and now the others are going in my wish list as well. This was a really nice little niche of stories as we go through different years and times in the logging communities. The stories are short enough for a quick read and also gives a good sample of the author's style.

From a lumberjack who has to kiss the lady to keep her from panicking, that was unexpected and a bit romantic with a bit humor, to a marriage of convenience, to women trying to keep their dreams alive in a man's world and an unforgiving land, I enjoyed all of these stories and the life and times the characters lived and struggled to survive in. I highly recommend these novellas for a quick escape.

My Thoughts:

What would make a bride run away on her wedding day? That is what both Mitchell and his future sister-in-law Lauren are attempting to find out. Especially since the love of Mitchell's life, Brenna, did just that. Where do they go from there?

Brenna is certainly dealing with some issues I am not even sure she thought would be an issue. She can't even believe she ran away from Mitchell on her wedding day.

What I liked about this story was the kindness and mercy that Mitchell showed to Brenna. He did not take the path of lashing out, he only sought to understand and help Brenna. In those choices, even though deep down he was mighty frustrated (understandably so), made him quite a romantic hero.

Throw in the help of Lauren a 14 year old lover of books and wanna be sleuth, and you have a team that is going to get to the bottom of Brenna's doubts and woo her back to the altar. A fun novella for this Christmas season.

How Did One Silly Story Become a Favorite Series?

Dickens and his revival of the “ghost story” at Christmas inspired the kick-off book in a series I’d planned almost twenty years ago. The little village of New Cheltenham first appeared in None So Blind and Thirty Days Hath…. However, the touristy village with its obsession with all things English was actually conceived almost twenty years ago!

That first book… still isn’t in print. I’ve reimagined it, and it will be coming out soon. However, Dickens… well, that guy has a way of getting under your skin, and what better place for a Dickens Ghost Storytelling Contest than in a village that looks ripped from England’s countryside?

The Ghosts of New Cheltenham was born. I actually thought it would be a great way for me to force myself to finish that book I’d started so long ago. But then Amanda Tru sent me a message that said, “We’re going to do one about wedding dresses,” and Something Borrowed, Someone Blue became the second book instead. I wanted more of Mitchell, Brenna, and the loveable Lauren, so I concocted a story that would give me just that.

Is it any wonder, then, when Amanda messaged again with our next collection theme of jilted brides or grooms, I immediately thought, “Oh, dear! What if Mitchell got ghosted at the altar?” That is the fastest title I’ve ever come up with!

Because one more Christmas story in New Cheltenham wasn’t quite enough, I set a third one there this year! The Bells of New Cheltenham. In that one, Mitchell is done with this ghost storytelling stuff and starts a contest of his own!

Review: The Kissing Tree by Karen Witemeyer, Regina Jennings, Amanda Dykes, and Nicole Deese

My Thoughts:

The Kissing Tree is a lovely read of four novellas that progress in time as each story takes place in the same town. And of course the Kissing Tree is a staple in each story.

Now each of these stories is written by different authors and I enjoyed their storytelling. Only one author was new to me. But what I really liked was the continuation of the tree, an inn, and other landmarks that stood for a over a hundred years and how they connected each generation.

Whether it was a failed kissing attempt with the boy you thought was meant for you, a spinster that was overlooked, a couple finding peace after a war, or a love that never stopped loving- these stories wrapped around my heart and brought many a smiles and sighs and helped me escape the world for a little while. All of them hit the right romantic buttons for me.

This was a fun read to traipse through time with. I admit there were a few times that the nostalgia of a previous story got me teary eyed, but I enjoyed seeing how each author worked in tandem with one another. Pick this one up, you won't be sorry.

A PROMISE FORGOTTEN by Heather B. Moore

Charlotte Ashford never thought she’d marry a vicar, and she never thought she’d find herself widowed with a young child to care for on her own. She certainly never thought she’d return to Somerset to live with her mother again, and Charlotte never thought she’d see him again. But Lord Wilshore has never forgotten her, and he has never forgotten their promise made long ago. Charlotte would love nothing more than for Lord Wilshore to forgive her, but too much heartache and too much time might make that impossible. Friendship is all she can hope for, but that hope may be dashed as well.

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this Timeless collection of romances about widows who knew no love in their first marriages. Whether the man was indifferent or too old or just too preoccupied, their wives were less in their eyes.

I thought the authors did a good job on bringing the plight of these young women to the forefront. That a lot of these widows were just pawns to be used by fathers and husbands. But what happens to the lady when her husband dies? All three of these women were in various degrees of bad situations especially financially.

Lady Joanna, the head widow if you will, was a hoot. She tied all of these women together as she sought to make them wiser the second time marriage came around, and for them not to dismiss their future security for love. If their new beaus loved them, they would provide for them. So true and relevant even for today.

I don't have a favorite story. Each was romantic and wonderfully told and I enjoyed how each lady found herself in love whether a new one or one that has been rekindled.

My Thoughts:

Catching Christmas was just the right little Christmas story to read at this time of year when trying to manage the busyness of the season and to still feel the holiday cheer. Author Blackstock takes a situation that is sad and can ultimately be depressing and turns it around to a story filled with hope, love, and a reason to live. This was also a story of second chances, but not quite in the way you might think.

Filled with subtle humor, bittersweet moments, and the frenzied rush of life and just trying to make a living we get the two alternate viewpoints of Finn the cab driver and Sydney the granddaughter of a woman wheel chair bound and suffering dementia by the name of Miss Callie. Finn unsuspectingly gets drawn in to Miss Callie’s strange requests as he drives her around town to her Dr.’s appointments, social calls that includes matchmaking for her granddaughter, and her Christmas shopping. Finn, so many times wants to walk away from her seemingly craziness but he is in Callie’s words, “a sweet boy” and finds himself unable to leave her on her own.

Sydney, a lawyer trying to keep her job, her bosses happy, and to win a case that is so ridiculous that even she herself is against her defendant, is really juggling too much, especially when her grandmother needs her care so much more now.

I really enjoyed this little witty Christmas story of life and love and joy and look forward to a reading it again and again.
