My Thoughts:

Julia Stevens is a travel blogger trying to outpace the tragedy of her past. She is also ready to venture on a more lucrative journalistic career after she finishes this one last story for her travel blog. However, it really does not go off as planned. Not at all. First, she has to be rescued by a tall handsome stranger who tells her basically not to venture alone anymore to finding a dying man in her rental home. I got to say, Julia sure knows how to have fun.

The rescuer is none other than Cade Haskins a former DEA agent now come home due to his father's illness. Trying to recalibrate his own life, he runs into the beautiful Julia and finds out she is also the witness to a drug house gone wrong. And she is letting the world know which puts a big target on her back. Now these two who already started off on the wrong foot, or maybe it was the right ski, have to work together for many reasons.

Fighting nature, drug lords, and their own personal attraction to one another made for a fun adventurous read. There are plenty of twists and lots of looking over your shoulder as the enemy is unknown. This book marks the first in new series by a debut author that I am very happy to have found.

My Thoughts:

Hope is confused as she tries to navigate her life. She has a lot going on that she wishes she could change. She is not happy with her job, her family life, and her car keeps breaking down. On top of that her boyfriend has asked for a break as he is not too sure that she is that into him. It is almost as if Hope is coasting through life.

Hope does seek help in prayer and her closest friends, and as she grows, she begins to see how other people view her. From the outside she does not always seem sure of anything, and maybe a little wishy washy in her faith. She sets out to change that and to change for the better.

I found the title of the story interesting with reference to Hope. She certainly is not unassailable in the start of the story. However, this is her faith journey, and it grows till she becomes ever stronger.

About the Author

Since I could hold a pencil, I’ve be writing.

In primary school, I wrote stories about my pets, my own version of princess stories, a classroom crush…

In high school, I wrote stories about horses, adventures, my sister…

However, as strong as the writing hobby was, I still pursued a career in Veterinary Nursing.

It wasn’t until God intervened and moved me out of the city and into a small country town to be a farmer’s wife, that he resurfaced the writing desire – and gave me the stories. So was born my debut series, each book holding a part of my own testimony, Casts of Silver.

It is my prayer that you enjoy the journey these stories take you on, and that they challenge, encourage and inspire you.

My Thoughts:

This was a heartfelt story of one woman's journey to finding herself and the One who loves her more than anything. Kizzie has been abandoned by her father after finding out she is pregnant. Kizzie has also been abandoned by the father of her child, even though he keeps coming around. What she discovers is true friendship with her neighbors who help set her on the road to forgiveness and accepting of herself. When Kizzy realizes, nothing is going to change for her and her son, she decides to set off to a new town and life.

This book seems to be in two parts. The first part, Kizzy growing up in wisdom and grace and the second in her life choices. She meets a man by the name of Noah Lewis who proves time and time again that he is not like the other men in her life, that expect her to be good or just good for them. Their journey to love is also wrought with challenges, however through Kizzy's change of heart towards God, she learns she will never be alone.

The author's notes are very enlightening on this story. Especially since this is loosely based on a true story.

About the Author

Pepper Basham is an award-winning author who writes romance peppered with grace and humor with southern Appalachian flair. Both her historical and contemporary novels have garnered recognition in the Grace Awards, Inspys, and ACFW Carol Awards. Her historical romance, The Thorn Healer, was a finalist in the 2018 RT Awards. Her historical romance novels, My Heart Belongs in the Blue Ridge and The Red Ribbon, and her contemporary novels, the Mitchell’s Crossroads and Pleasant Gap series, showcase her Appalachian heritage, as well as her love for humor and family. It’s pretty easy to overlook wildflowers.

I mean, until they show off all their pretty colors, especially in the middle of a barren place, then they’re noticed and usually appreciated but did you know there’s a lot more to wildflowers that…meets the eye?

Apart from providing food and shelter for smaller animals and/or insects or assisting bees in pollination, wildflowers can be used as an ingredient for healing remedies and contribute to soil health and reduce erosion.

Especially in places where other plants aren’t likely to grow. They’re known as “hardy” because they can survive all sorts of weather conditions, extreme temperature, animal damage, even drought.

So why am I talking about wildflowers??

Because, in lots of ways, wildflowers are a great example of what hope looks like.

1. Hope nourishes. Romans 15: 14 “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.” When we recall and reflect on what the Bible says about who we are in Christ, our hearts are encouraged and given the spiritual energy they need to remind ourselves of truth in the middle of hard times and wilderness-living.
2. Hope spreads – Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” A heart filled with the knowledge of the love of God is a heart filled and “overflowing” with hope…and that hope is contagious. When we know whose we are and what our future looks like because of the One who loves us, we live in joy…even when the storms come.
3. Hope restores and heals: “Isaiah 40:31 reads, “For those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
4. Hope protects – Psalm 62:5-6 “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” Life is hard. Sometimes, bone-achingly, soul-shakingly hard. If we’re reliant on our own ability to protect our faith or mind or soul, we will fail. We’re not strong enough and neither is any of our human defenses, but God is amply able to protect us from the storms, trials, and droughts that mean to wither our hope. HE is the hero of our heart’s story and he is armed to overcome so we can trust Him with our hope and our futures.
5. And hope grows in the hard places. Hope does not consist of weak or wishful thinking, it grows out of nutrients squeezed from the soil it has. Hard-won, many times. Romans 5:3-4 “ Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” A life with Christ doesn’t mean that pain is taken away, but there is a promise and purpose in the pain. The promise that God is with us and a purpose that He is making us more like Him.

Hope Like Wildflowers tells the story of hope, but the main character, Kizzie, isn’t relying on her own abilities to keep her hope strong. Oh no! She learned to trust in the only One who is strong enough to BE her hope. He nourishes her heart when her life has turned upside down and she’s been forsaken. He restores and heals her when she’s been broken and cast out. He protects her from dangerous men who try to hurt her, but also he protects her heart from choosing the wrong path. And through the hard places of life, Kizzie’s hope overflows in joy to touch the lives of those around her.

And it’s beautiful and unexpected.

Like wildflowers.

My Thoughts:

This coming-of-age story is set in the year of 1917, a year of a lot of history for our world. The Great War was ending, the influenza was rampant, and cars and other progress was beginning to take shape. This is the story of a young woman, Lacy Jones who graduated from high school and has just turned eighteen. She is presented with an opportunity to go with her friend to a new town to visit and find her favorite teacher, who is now married. (The teacher's story is in another series.) She accepts, rather quickly, but with a heart of sorrow. She does not really want to leave her parents, but she is excited to travel.

Lacy grew up in a poor town, and her family has always struggled with money. She wants to break free from that and become self-reliant. In this new town she meets new and old friends, gets a job and is making her own money, and she discovers freedom to be herself.

This situation is hard for her parents to accept, and they insist that she come home. There is another reason she would like to stay, and that reason is a widower by the name of Conrad Van Drunen. He is a little bit older than her, and he has two children, but he sees in Lacy a chance at happiness again. What will Lacy decide? A story on finding your purpose in life.

My Thoughts:

In this prequel to the Wyoming Sunrise series, this story is all about new beginnings. Both our hero and heroine are looking to start on a life path that will help them in their respective careers. They both are quite young and both of them are starting out in professions that will take some patience and perseverance.

Lydie is young and will be the town's schoolteacher. This is her first time off on her own as well as her two Aunts are staying in a town over. They had been with her every step of the way since her parents' early deaths. They believe in her so Lydie should believe in herself that she can do this.

Solomon is the new reverend, and he is young, at only twenty-one, he must show the town he is up to this position. But it is going to take patience and grit and he must also silence the voice of his grandfather in his head. A grandfather that didn't really care for him in the first place. He also lost his parents at a very young age.

Solomon and Lydie have a comical first meeting and it will take some work on Solomon's part to smooth things over. But as the smoothing comes so does the becoming of friends that will lead to more. These two new to town young people will have some growing up to do.

Stagecoach etiquette, a casket for sale in the mercantile, and mock turtle soup were just a few of the items included in Love’s New Beginnings. Research is always fun for historical novels, and I even discovered that some people ate skunks back in the “olden days.” Not a regular delicatessen, but they did eat them on occasion. After reading about the ingredients for mock turtle soup and discovering about skunks for dinner (aka supper), I’m even more grateful for enchiladas and regular plain ol’ hamburgers. My Thoughts:

This was a lovely visit to a country I would really like to visit in real life, Scotland. We begin in England as twin sisters, Alice and Ivy are saying goodbye to each other. Alice has married and is moving to America with her new husband. Ivy is heartbroken at losing her sister, but in a way envies her as well. Alice and Ivy though twins, are very different. Alice was always the protector, as Ivy is a little bit more fragile. She views life differently in her mind and the rest of the world looks at her as odd.

However, Ivy also has dreams, dreams very similar to Alice's. But even in her own mind she sees herself as not strong enough or much too slow. She is looking for her purpose and she believes she has found it as she decides to go visit some old friends in Scotland. Coming back to Scotland themselves is others she stayed with, Violet and Jordy, who is now a doctor.

Jordy is carrying some heavy past baggage of sin. He is having a hard time forgiving himself and moving on, seemingly a little bit frightened about falling into temptation again. And then he and Ivy are reunited again, and she is still the most precious human he knows. He begins to fall in love with her but in his heart has decided she is too good for him.

Ivy on the the other hand believes that Jordy is much too perfect for her and her imperfections. Will these two see beyond themselves and their pasts to a brighter future full of dreams come true and love? This was a gentle romance of two people letting go of the past and moving forward. This is the first book I have read in this series, much to my chagrin. I do have plans to pick up the rest of the stories, as they intrigue me, and I see that a new one is coming soon. That one is on how Alice is fairing in her new role.

Meet the Author:

Kellyn Roth is a historical romance & women’s fiction author who writes about the empty places where hope has the most room to grow. Her novels include the inspirational Victorian family saga, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy, and the Kees & Colliers series, which follows a broken family in the tumultuous years of the first half of the 20th century.
