My Thoughts on Blind Trust by Natalie Walters

About:

She's risking her life. He's risking his heart. It's unclear which is more dangerous.

Lyla Fox knows she has a reputation at the SNAP Agency for being impulsive, but when she receives a threatening letter from a man she helped put in prison, she can't stop herself from going all in to find out why he's coming after her. Unfortunately, she's going to need the help of the one person who questions her choices more than anyone else.

Explosives and weapons specialist Nicolás Garcia agrees to help Lyla in order to keep her safe, but her recklessness continues to be a major concern, especially when her investigation into a conspiracy puts a target on her back. Dealing with bombs is dangerous. Working with Lyla is proving to be just as treacherous--to both the mission and his heart.

My Thoughts:

Blind Trust brings us to Lyla and Nicolas, (or Nic for short) storyline and the confrontation of their feelings for each other. They are both part of the Snap Agency and have been background agents in the other books. I really wanted to get to the bottom of their story.

Nic is a serious guy, and he is not sure what to do with his feelings for Lyla, and feelings he definitely has. He is concerned for her dangerous actions, even though she gets the bad guys, and he really, really wants her to be careful on her missions. So much so that he wonders if he is actually putting her in danger by even being there with her.

Lyla is a capable agent, and sometimes really gets aggravated with Nic's seemingly lack of trust in her and her abilities. She wants to prove herself to him that she is a valuable member of the team.

Their feelings are like a third character in their relationship and in their life. Even if they will not acknowledge them, or really even talk about them to anyone else, those feelings do not stay hidden. They are there for all the world to see.

This was a fantastic story with romance, danger, teamwork, and some serious undercover work. And someone is out to get Lyla no matter what the cost.

My Thoughts and More on The Neighbor Renovation by Grace Worthington

About the Book

Book: The Neighbor Renovation

Author: Grace Worthington

Genre: Sweet Romantic Comedy

Release date: March 30, 2023

My perfect summer just got ruined by a brunette in a tool belt.

This was my summer to get away from it all. Live like a hermit. Fix up my family’s vacation home.

Until Ella arrived.

My infuriating neighbor has returned for beach season.

Ever since our families bought summer homes next to each other, that was the beginning of our neighbor war.

Now I have to see her every. single. day.

When I let it slip that I’m making a few home improvements, she jumps at the chance to help. She’s an interior designer who needs work. I’m a man who loathes shopping. Any mention of the words color palette makes me want to break out in hives.

We’re the dynamic duo for this fixer upper.

There’s only one problem: the more time we spend together, the more attracted I am to her. Now our on-the-job flirting is veering into dangerous territory.

Because if there’s one thing I know, Ella and I are not meant to be together.

I’m emotionally unavailable. She’s sworn off relationships. And our families hate each other.

I know my future is at stake. But I can’t seem to tear myself away from this project…or her.

So I tell myself:

I most definitely will not fall for my neighbor.

But you know what they say about promises you can’t keep? Don’t make them.

Like most home projects, I’m learning that nothing ever goes according to plan.

Especially when it comes to love

My Thoughts:

I adored this sweet funny, sometimes sarcastic, and very romantic tale of two once upon a time enemies as kids, meeting again years later. Ella has lived a life where she and her mother could never live up to her aunt's expectations. However, Ella is now an interior designer intent on opening her own shop, but she needs the cash monies she might win while decorating her aunt's home for this contest. But Ella's aunt just doesn't trust her, nor does she think she can do it. So, plan B is to convince her aunt's neighbor, now under Grant Romano's care, to let her decorate his grandmother's house.

Things are uncomfortable and get even more ridiculous between Ella and Grant as both try to cover up their attraction to one another. Both are dealing with the past and are having a hard time moving into the future. To make matters worse, there is a family feud that could rival that of Romeo and Juliet's between their two families. And they are just so very different from one another. Grant is more private which makes him seem grumpy, and Ella is adventurous, and glass is always full kind of a person. It was a fun ride seeing them push and pull with one another as they learn to grapple with their losses and move on.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Grace

I love home renovation shows, because they make it look so easy to magically turn your home into something amazing in only a half-hour. (If only that worked in real life.)

But what if two people who were enemies worked on renovating a home together? Would they survive the renovation? Could it even bring them together?

I love all the tropes, but enemies to lovers is one of the most satisfying for me, especially in romantic comedy. The huge payoff is seeing two very opposite people come together quite magically. In the end, I’m always rooting for the couple who overcomes the odds.

It’s also been my experience that no matter how much you prepare for a home project, it never goes according to plan. This sets the stage for lots of hilarious scenarios as things go wrong and the couple learns to navigate these unexpected detours together.

But in The Neighbor Renovation, it’s not just about the physical home. There is a deeper metaphor of what happens in their lives as they learn to overcome past wounds and take a chance on love. Just like the home renovation shows, the renovation that happens in their hearts is almost miraculous.

So if you like HGTV, sweet romantic comedies,  grumpy sunshine couples, and second chance love stories, then you’re going to enjoy The Neighbor Renovation: A sweet romantic comedy.

My Thoughts on After the Shadows by Amanda Cabot

About:

A brighter future awaits--if she can escape the shadows of the past

Emily Leland sheds no tears when her abusive husband is killed in a bar fight, but what awaits her back home in Sweetwater Crossing is far from the welcome and comfort she expected. First she discovers her father has died under mysterious circumstances. Then the house where the handsome new schoolteacher, Craig Ferguson, and his son are supposed to board burns, leaving them homeless. When Emily proposes turning the family home into a boardinghouse, her sister is so incensed that she leaves town.

Alone and broke, her family name sullied by controversy, Emily is determined to solve the mystery of her father's death--and to aid Craig, despite her fears of men. The widowed schoolmaster proves to be a devoted father, an innovative teacher, and an unexpected ally. As they work to uncover the truth, they just may find the key to unlock a future neither could have imagined.

My Thoughts:

After the Shadows is an appropriate title for this storyline, but as we start out, our characters have some shadows they still need to walk through.

Emily Leland is a new widow, but she does not mourn her husband. After her short courtship and quick wedding, she finds out soon enough that George is not a nice man. She still bears the marks of his last beating before he died suddenly. Emily goes back home to Sweetwater Crossing, to a home that is not the same. Her mother has died, one sister is traveling, and Louise her youngest sister is angry. What none of the sisters can imagine is what happens next. Their world continues to become shattered.

Craig Ferguson and his little boy, Noah, want a fresh start after the tragic accident killing his beloved wife. So, he decides to move to Sweetwater Crossing and start over as the town's schoolteacher. However, on his very first day Craig is wondering if he will ever escape tragedy as in this town, something is seriously wrong.

Craig and Emily, two strangers, begin to know each other under unusual circumstances along with the pain of loss in their lives. But there is something going on the town that really needs to be stopped.

I enjoyed the sweet romance between Craig and Emily that happened despite their circumstances. The mystery was well done and kept me turning the pages.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Sacrifices will have to be made.  Challenges overcome.

Find out as the final chapter in the Hopeful Heart Series comes to a conclusion!

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

I have really been looking forward to this continuation of Ben and Nicki's story. At the end of the last story, Ben and Nicki decided to get married, even though they hadn't known each other for long, so that they could adopt little Mei Ling and get her the medical attention she needs. But can they make it work, especially when they are trying to keep it all hush hush from their families.

Well, nothing turns out as planned. They are met with one obstacle after another. Nicki already thought she had her life planned out, then she met Mei Ling who captured her heart. Then Ben came into her life when she needed him most and they planned to get married. Now more heartbreaking news has Nicki thinking maybe she is holding Ben back from his calling. Throughout the story I was really cheering these two on. Is Nicki falling for Ben and would she want to marry him if all of their other plans fell through? Will these three ever be a family? There were some very heartbreaking decisions throughout this read and I enjoyed their story very much. It took some unexpected twists and turns, and I was not disappointed by the outcome.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Nicki Mayfield’s Guide to Preparing for the Unexpected

At the beginning of Perfectly Matched, Nicki Mayfield and Ben Carrington are about to tie the knot AND adopt a toddler. Being a wife and a mother are foreign concepts to Nicki, who never dreamed she’d be either. Especially not within such a short timeframe!

However, just as Nicki and Ben began to move forward with their new family, a shocking revelation threatens their happily ever after and throws their perfectly arranged plans out the window. Thankfully, being a professional organizer Nicki knows how to prepare for a surprise or two.

Here are Nicki’s five best tips for preparing for those unexpected moments in life:

  1. Don’t panic. That usually only makes things worse! Take a few deep breaths, pray, and see if you can get a clear understanding of what’s going on so you can get a handle on the situation.
  2. Devise a temporary plan. Knowing that things are not going according to plan doesn’t mean you have to jump ship completely. See if you can come up with an alternate plan to carry you through the next few hours, days, or weeks until you can get back to your original agenda.
  3. Stand together, not divided. Don’t let the unexpected cause division – either mentally, relationally, physically, or spiritually. Now more than ever you and your friends/family/significant other need to band together. Find ways to make that happen—even if it might be costly—because you’ll need all the support you can get during those turbulent times.
  4. Don’t make assumptions and give up. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment, assume the worst, and be tempted to quit. Don’t! Keep the faith and keep fighting until you’re absolutely certain there are no other options left.
  5. See the unexpected as a blessing rather than a curse. While we may not enjoy the interruption of an unexpected circumstance, it might just be part of God’s divine plans. If it is, then you can expect a blessing to come from it, regardless of how dim the situation may look at the moment.

See how well Nicki follows her own advice and handles all the unexpected twists and turns she faces in Perfectly Matched, book three in the Hopeful Heart Series, releasing April 4, 2023.

My Thoughts and More on Targeted in the Desert by Dana Mentink

About the Book

Book: Targeted in the Desert

Author: Dana Mentink

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release date: March 28, 2023

Family secrets have Felicia Tennison, and the sister she never knew existed, on the run. Someone is after them, and Felicia will have to turn to someone she never wanted to see again for help—her ex. Sheriff Jude Duke vows to protect them as they race to uncover why the little girl is a target. But the search to find the answers could cost them their futures.

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

Felicia has just received some startling news. She has received a note and picture from a woman who says that her sister is in danger. Felicia is shocked. She was adopted when she was just a baby, and she never went looking for her birth parents as she had a good life with her adoptive parents. They saw her through her growing up years and through her medical situation. So, receiving this news is quite shocking and spurs Felicia into action. Little does she know that she and Gracie, the little girl, are in quite a lot of danger.

Unfortunately, Felicia needs help and even more unfortunately, that help comes in the way of her ex-boyfriend Sheriff Jude Duke. They really cared for one another, but he broke up with her. Why? Well Jude has his reasons and one of them is that he is thirteen years older than her, but is that enough to not have the happiness they could have together? Or is there more? I was very invested in their relationship.

Jude will stop at nothing to protect Felicia and Gracie. These attempts on her life have him acting as her bodyguard. Of course, he loves her, but is that love enough?

I really enjoyed this last installment of the Desert Justice series and finally getting Jude's story. It was a fun adrenaline filled suspense with secrets that were just begging to be answered.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Dana

At last! We’ve arrived at the final book in the Desert Justice series! It seems like just yesterday I was finishing book one, about cousin Beckett Duke who was falsely imprisoned. Then we met cowboy Levi and his twin Willow, dog lover Austin, donkey rescuer Nora and FINALLY sheriff Jude Duke gets his story! I am a fan of a hero with some miles under his belt, aren’t you? Could it be because I’ve got more than a few under mine? Ending this series is bittersweet because I am thrilled that the Dukes all received their happy endings, but I’ll miss writing about their adventures in Death Valley. Hope you’ll come along on my next series. (Could be there are bloodhounds in our fictional future!)

God bless!

My Thoughts and More on Mirrored Reflections by JF Ridgley

Book Details:

Book Title:  Mirrored Reflections by J.F. Ridgley
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+) ,  418 pages
GenreChristian Romance
PublisherR Pride Publishing
Release date:   December 2022
Content RatingPG-13 +M.  This is a Christian Romance, no sex. two hot kisses. Lots of trauma but a happy ending. There is a language warning: Chad's debridement is painful, being a burn survivor is painful and the story is about also about sexual trafficking.
Book Description:

“I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU” - Hebrews 13:5

Opposites attract and Chad and Sierra are that.

Chad is destroyed on the outside by a suicide bomber while Sierra is broken on the inside by human trafficking. They are each other’s reflection of who they are - beautiful but ravaged by life.

Chad Michaels, an Afghan vet, comes home to a suicide bomber who destroys not only his family but the man he was. Now, he must deal with life as a burn victim -- as a monster. But Sierra sees what a beautiful man Chad truly is.

Not all wounds are flesh. Many are inside one’s soul where Sierra Smith’s scars run deep. Yet, Chad sees the innocence that Sierra fails to see. Kidnapped at the early age of six, Sierra was raised to become a high-end prostitute who now dreams of becoming a nurse...someone who helps heal people not service them. But her past relentlessly haunts her.

Sierra and Chad are determined to help each other heal from their traumas – whatever it takes. And, somehow, with God’s help, they will survive to see a brighter day.
BUY THE BOOK:
Amazon
Books2Reads
My Thoughts:

This is a story about two broken people who are trying, and sometimes not trying to just live and breathe. And the question is, can they move on, and could they move on together?

Sierra is a woman with a horrible background. Kidnapped as a young girl and sold and forced to do unspeakable things, she has escaped and is now working her way to becoming a nurse. She works in a burn unit and a man has been brought in who had everything to live for.

Chad is a father and husband and a veteran. Glad he was to be home until a terrorist decided to take his wife away and turn him into what he deems a monster. He is severely burned, and he must heal on the inside and out so he can be the father his little girl needs.

This was an emotional book and for more sensitive readers please take note that this is more of a mature read. It does deal with hard topics and there is a bit of foul language throughout. Chad and Sierra are both dealing with deep wounds and sometimes they are judged for those wounds. Chad for looking like a monster and Sierra for the life she lived. But they are so much more than their circumstances.

In the author's notes we are told this was a little bit of Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera. I could see that.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

IRON is a Christian, New Adult, Fantasy Fairytale Retelling

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

First and foremost, this is a Cinderella retelling. I adore fairytales and I especially am curious when authors put their unique spin on them. This was an interesting one and it is the first in a series.

I do not know if there are other books that involve this series that were written previously or not, but all of these characters had pretty well-established backstories. Some of the past is unraveled as we find out secrets and revelations along with the characters. Red is a complicated character along with her friends and family. And I was not sure who were the traditional characters in the Cinderella story. This story was surrounded by mystery and a lot of unknowns along with characters searching for where they fit in their world.

There was also a lot of kidnapping of children, which I did think that not many of the townspeople or nobles were that concerned about, in the beginning only Red seemed to care.

This is a fantasy that puts me more in the mind of a medieval story. There is no magic and I really appreciated the author's take on Cinderella.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Madisyn

There are many original Cinderella stories, from all cultures and languages. Perhaps the two most common tales, however, are Frenchman Charles Perrault’s (also called Cendrillon) and the German Brothers Grimm’s Aschenputtel. The majority of these originals, and Brothers Grimm’s in particular, are not the sparkles-and-magic versions we are more familiar with. They are darker, bloodier, and deadlier, though they still possess an amazing display of creativity and storytelling.

The iconic, classical Disney retelling drew from Perrault’s version. I based IRON off a blend of Aschenputtel and Perrault’s, with very little influence garnered from Disney’s. Although I wanted it to be obvious IRON is a fairy tale retelling, I also wanted to put an often-unfound spin on it, which is where Redwyn and her occupation shine through. In addition, I am a firm believer there is no such thing as ”love at first sight”, also called ”insta love”, which is quite common in many fairy tales and retellings.

Instead, I wanted to present a nonmagical retelling based on faith, family, and bravery. Perhaps that is why this story turned out rawer and much more touching than I ever imagined. Within the pages of this book loyalty drives characters to step outside their comfortable boundaries and preferences, desperation reminds them why they need God, and bravery takes root even in those who thought themselves hopeless cowards.

Heavy faith elements, feathers, cranky horses, wolves, sinister plots, a creepy forest, and more take this story beyond the typical plot found in Cinderella retellings. There’s also humor, sarcasm, and a feisty detective who can’t quite grasp the concept of tactfulness.

So, if you enjoy fairy tale retellings with a plentitude of faith, humor, and action, IRON might be the book for you.

You can find IRON’s inspiration board here.
