My Thoughts:

The Targeted is a story that unfortunately, happens all too often in real life. This is a story that is told through the victim's viewpoint. And a victim that is actively seeking justice for herself and those who like her who have been abused.

Chloe is trying to keep her life from unraveling. From caring for her mother with some medical issues, financial problems, and trying to figure out if she should continue her law degree are some big issues she is facing. She is also dealing with a past that has shook her to her core, all the while being a gymnastic coach and trying to protect other young girls from the abuse she and some of her friends have endured. Add that her missing sister for fourteen years is back. And so is the man that has abused them.

Chloe is a character that really considers all of the ramifications that her decisions may have on others. But she seeks justice, and she finds help in Dare Shepherd a law student that takes up her cause.

There were a lot of moving pieces in this story and some hard issues that were tackled. Trust in others is important, and when that trust is broken who do you turn to?

About the Book

An Appearance of Impropriety

Title: An Appearance of Impropriety
Author: Jayna Breigh
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: January 27, 2026
Genre: Romantic Legal Drama

Will their love turn into a scandal despite their efforts?

As the youngest female judge in Los Angeles, Mahalia Jackson has her career on a fast track to success. Her polished exterior makes sure of that. But when she volunteers for the Junior Jurors and ends up working side by side with attorney JD Cash, her plans begin to falter.

JD heads up the program—born out of his own troubled past—where local teens learn about the legal system. He leverages his position as an attorney to fulfill God's calling on his life: to support the orphans and widows of society who have lost beloved fathers and husbands to TransNation's eighteen-wheeled time bombs roaming America's freeways.

Mahalia's rule—never date a lawyer—is a straitjacket that tightens when she presides over the case where JD serves as a young widow's attorney. When Mahalia is placed in a vulnerable position, her resolve begins to waver.

Her increasing proximity to the empathetic lawyer sparks an onslaught from anonymous online adversaries attempting to destroy Mahalia's reputation and career by throwing around claims of an appearance of impropriety. The digital disgrace pushes Mahalia to ask one hard question: Is loving JD worth risking her career?

With a great story, well-developed characters, and a tale that explores the value of second chances and giving back, the latest from Breigh is a must-buy. —Library Journal, Starred Review

"An Appearance of Impropriety is filled with characters I cared about who were placed in challenging situations that compelled me to keep reading long into the night."

My Thoughts:

I found this story to be a well thought out legal drama that pulls you into the novel that is caught up into a court case that really touches on some difficult subjects. We really get into the heads of our two main characters who both have worked hard on their careers, JD is an attorney with a heart for widows and orphans due to his history and Mahalia is an upcoming judge that she worked so hard to achieve.

Of course, there is an underlying tension of romance between them that makes things a little more difficult. Especially in their professional careers. However, is their romance more important or are they both content to let this chance go? I am always for romance so that had me really hoping for these two. Though, I do understand their situations, especially when they worked so hard to get where they are today.

I feel like I learned a lot in this story. The legal drama was compelling, the romance was genuine, the causes needed justice, and the mystery kept me turning the pages. I don't read a lot of legal dramas, but this one had an intensity that sucked me in and gave me an appreciation for a genre I don't normally read.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
