Book Description:

When Jessie Gibbs meets Lemuel Sanders, she thinks she has finally found her ideal man—until she discovers that he is the ghost of a Civil War soldier. For 144 years, Lem has kept vigil at his unmarked battlefield grave, seeking someone to complete a personal mission so he can go to his final rest. As love grows between them, Jessie is torn. If she succeeds in fulfilling Lem’s wish, she’ll lose him when he passes into the afterlife. But if she fails and he remains in the world, she’ll never be free to find intimacy with a living man.

A riveting story of faith, passion, and selfless devotion, STONES RIVER shows the power of love to overcome all obstacles—even death itself.

STONES RIVER is Book I of The Sentinel Heart Trilogy, with Book II, SOLDIER’S JOY, coming out in 2026!

Meet the author:

Before beginning to write full-time in 2008, M. F. (Mimi) Jones was an editor at Viking Press, where she discovered Judith Guest's bestseller ORDINARY PEOPLE in the slush pile and became its editor. She went on to senior editorial positions at Redbook, Family Circle, and Reader’s Digest magazines. In addition to writing, she’s a devotee of reading, knitting (while listening to audiobooks), choral singing, and hiking with her rescue dog, Ruby. She lives in Tennessee with her husband, composer Douglas Hedwig.

My Thoughts:
This was an interesting story that takes place in the year 2007 near unmarked graves of Confederate soldiers. Jessie Gibbs likes to be a part of the reenactment of the Civil War, so she is not surprised to stumble upon a man one night who looks all too real and in his own Civil War garb. Who he really is, is something to hard to fathom that Jessie is having a hard time understanding this reality.
Lemuel Sanders, Lem, was a Civil War soldier who died and was buried with six others 144 years ago. He wants his and their families to know about their gravesites. For whatever reason, his spirit has not moved on, and he is able to communicate with Jessie.
This has a lot of Civil War history, tied up with a paranormal romance. One that is fraught with uncertainty and love. This is not usually my normal read, but the premise sounded interesting. When I do read this type of story, I am always interested in how the author will end it. This story was a mixed bag for me, though it is resolved by the end. I am somewhat curious at the author's future books in this series.
There is a sprinkling of mild language and there is one scene between a married couple. Nothing explicit.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
