Review: On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White

Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart”

All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.

As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.

With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.

Series: The Codebreakers (Book 2)
Paperback: 390 pages
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers (January 7, 2020)

My Thoughts:

What a delightfully, romantic adventure during the time of the Great War dealing with spies, espionage, and true love. This is Phillip Camden, aka the Black Heart's story. But is he really as evil as the media and others make him out to be? Well we know from the previous story that he is not, however as we get into his story and inside his head, he certainly has some dark secrets in his past. What really happened the day his whole crew died?

This is also the story of Arabelle Denler, a nurse who is longing for the day when she can get married and have babies and have a true home. Her dreams are reasonable and she certainly is rich enough to make it a nice home, except she is willing to settle.

As the war continues to heat up and danger is coming onto English soil and ever closer, Camden and Ara must navigate through the dangers of this current life, major disappointments, and what they find is a friendship that is sweeter than anything either have had before. Love blossoms for these two that puts to shame Camden's empty pursuits of the past and Ara's broken dreams of the future. They were a true romantic couple to root for and when Camden set his sights on Ara, wow!

Author White is a true word smith and a story teller that pulls you into the pages of her stories and I did not want to leave. I cannot wait for the continuation in this series.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
