Two Southerners thrown together by the Union army. He’s on a quest for vengeance. She’s determined to preserve her family.

Confederate Sergeant Seth Morgan finally reaches Marietta to check on his family, but the last thing he expects is to meet a woman who sparks attraction he thought he’d never feel again. Unfortunately, she’s a Yankee prisoner and being sent north to Louisville, Kentucky.

Seth is forced to return to his unit in Virginia, and he never anticipated their next meeting would be when he’s taken to Louisville as a prisoner. While Seth searches the Confederate ranks for the man who murdered his wife, Lydia implores him to ask after her missing nephew. Neither one expects just how far the search will take them, or what they’ll discover along the way.

My Thoughts:

During the Civil War, southern factory workers were captured and sent up North by the Union Army. They were treated as well as could be in a time of shortage and war. Lydia Gibson and her young pregnant stepdaughter are two such women who were trying to flee but could not. Lydia had worked at a cotton mill while her husband Cal went off to war. Now she doesn't know if Cal is alive or dead, and she is unsure where to turn next.

Seth Morgan is a Confederate Sergeant who has been working to get back home to check in with his family. He is also holding a vengeance in his heart at the man who is guilty of murdering his late wife and aims to make him pay.

We get both Seth and Lydia's stories for a little while before they meet up. Then they do and Seth is nursed back to health by Lydia, and he begins to fall for her. However, they have much to get through and many truths to uncover before they could even think about being together. And there is a war going on that has upturned all of their lives.

This is the second in the series Rescued Hearts of the Civil War that is about a few tidbits of history I am unfamiliar with.

I was provided a copy of this novel by the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

About the Author

Born into a family of storytellers, Susan Pope Sloan published her first articles in high school and continued writing sporadically for decades. Retirement provided the time to focus on writing and indulge her avid interest in history. Her Civil War series begins (and ultimately ends) in her home state of Georgia with references to lesser-known events of that period. She and husband Ricky live near Columbus where she participates in Word Weavers, ACFW, and Toastmasters

More from Susan

As a “pantser” when it comes to writing, I never know how the story will develop or which characters will demand more “stage” time. Lydia Gibson was always destined to be a main character, but I had no idea who would be her leading man. When Seth Morgan appeared in Rescuing Rose, I saw him only as an object to create tension between Rose and Noah. Then I learned how his wife died and knew he had to be rescued from his grief and anger. At first, I thought he might match up with Celeste, but it made more sense for him to be drawn to Lydia, who was a war widow. He was a fun protagonist as he loudly proclaimed his lack of interest in marrying again but always went out of his way to assist the women he met. Seth liked to create the illusion of being a tough fighter, but what he really wanted was someone to love and share his life. As Lydia struggled to overcome her poor self-image, Seth discovered his strength in following the path of peace.

My Thoughts and More on A Summer at Sagamore by Lisa M. Prysock

About the Book

Book: A Summer at Sagamore

Author: Lisa M. Prysock

Genre: Historical Christian Romance

Release date: March 14, 2023

Can summer love survive amid mystery and mayhem?

When Abigail Greenwood and her cousins settle in for their annual summer retreat at the stunning and impressive Sagamore Resort in the Adirondacks,  all she wants is to spend as much time as possible plunking out stories on her typewriter. But when her cousins insist she join them in the tradition of choosing a beau to adore from a distance during their stay, she reluctantly plays along, setting her sights on a mysteriously quiet and aloof guest. What started as harmless fun soon changes as Abby finds herself captivated by debonair—and handsome—Jackson Gable. Who is he, and why does his arrogant amused smile exasperate her so much?

When a series of events causing mayhem and mischief begin to occur at Sagamore, journalist Jackson Gable is determined to get to the bottom of it, since his father is an investor of the resort. Jack has a nose for mysteries, but he may have to use his recently earned law degree and some of his posh family connections to sleuth out the culprit. Are the events connected? Why are they happening? And why can’t he get the beautiful Abby off his mind?

My Thoughts:

What could be better than getting away for the whole summer with your grandmother, sister, and cousin and at a beautiful resort in the Adirondacks? For Abigail Greenwood, this sounds like the idea writing place for her novel. Plenty of promised uninterrupted writing time, along with spending time with family. However, her sister and cousin are out for some matchmaking, so they set up a little game and wait and see what will come of it. For all of them.

All three pick their gentlemen to fantasize about and see what opportunities may arise in meeting them. Plenty do arise and all three girls get to spend time with their selected beaus. But something is going on at the resort, and undercurrent of malice. There are too many accidents and coincidences of bad stuff happening. It is possible someone could get seriously injured if Abby's and Jack, who Abby thought at first as a rake, don't get to the bottom of this mystery.

This was a delightfully refreshing summer novel in the Gilded Age with a romance, family, and mystery all together.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Behind the scenes at A Summer at Sagamore

When a dear writing friend approached me about writing a contribution for Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts, my heart leapt. The Gilded Age is my favorite time to write. Ask me to write anything from 1870 to 1910, and I’m hooked. I love the way traditions are colliding with progress and changing the world in this era.

An exciting time for women, I knew the heroine, Abigail, would be a writer, enthralled with her new, clunky, heavy manual typewriter. Independent, set to inherit her grandmother’s wealth, she would not be looking for romance. I wanted Abby’s grandmother, cousin, and sister to give us plenty of humor and fun along the way. Meanwhile, Abby, would portray a young woman on the brink of writing about her faith, inspired by a few pioneer writers and a previous experience to join the endeavor to pave the way for others to do the same.

Along comes our hero, Jackson. Jack has this Clark Gable kind of vibe, only younger, more handsome. He has strong faith, but it’s quiet, stifled by his position in society. Abby brings out the best in him. I loved watching their romance blossom and their trust in God grow amid the mystery of all the happenings at the Sagamore. More themes came out of the book than I expected. I can’t wait to share it with you.

My Thoughts on Windswept Way by Irene Hannon

About:

One house that deserves a second chance meets two hearts that deserve the same . . .

Buying a haunted house was never in Ashley Scott's plans, but when an intriguing opportunity drops into her lap after a major life setback, she finds herself trekking cross-country to Hope Harbor on the Oregon coast to launch a new life.

Wounded warrior Jonathan Gray isn't sure what to make of the attractive woman on his reclusive older neighbor's isolated property, but her presence is none of his business--until she enlists his help with an ambitious project. When Jonathan finds his interest in the new arrival becoming more personal than professional, however, his defenses go up. There's no room in his life--or his heart--for romance.

Yet as these two hurting souls join forces to restore life, laughter, and love to a historic estate, might they also find healing, hope, and happiness themselves?

Come home to Hope Harbor--where hearts heal . . . and love blooms.

My Thoughts:

It was so nice to again visit Hope Harbor, the small seaside coastal town, and to meet up again with beloved characters from previous books. Including the bickering yet best friends minister and priest, Charley and his famous fish tacos, and his loving seagull couple.

This story focuses on second chances. Not only for the couple, but also for an old mansion called Edgecliff, a place that has seen much tragedy to be sure, but where much happiness used to be as well. Newcomer and historian Ashley Scott has come across an opportunity of a lifetime. To partner with Rose, the reclusive owner of Edgecliff, to bring back to life the charms of this old home by becoming a venue for weddings and other important events. But it needs a lot of work and money. Can she do this and succeed? Ashley is quite happy to leave her home in Tennessee and move to Oregon, if only to heal from the wounds inflicted by her ex-boyfriend.

Jon and Ashley's first somewhat meeting was quite memorable. Not a meet cute but a meet scare that had me chuckling, but I understood Ashley's fear. Jon is scarred from his time in service, and he hides himself and his scars behind masks, glasses, hats, whatever he can. When he meets Ashley, his heart begins to thaw and thoughts of romance invade, but that is only a painful reminder as to why any women, especially one like Ashley would or could choose to love him.

With a huge home renovation and time restraints on their hands, Jon and Ashley get to know one another, and maybe this beauty will love the beast.

My Thoughts and More on Mail-Order Bride Substitute by Linda Ford

About the Book

Book: Mail-Order Bride Substitute

Author: Linda Ford

Genre: Historical Western Romance

Release date: March 29, 2023

Olivia comes from a rich family, but it hasn’t protected her from malicious rumors. A marriage of convenience as a mail-order bride to Riley Shannon is exactly what she needs for a fresh start. Especially when he makes it clear he wants no romance. Something she is in complete agreement with. She’ll go in place of her friend, Sylvia, who has changed her mind about the arrangement she made with Riley.

Riley has bitter memories of loving a rich woman who doesn’t care to embrace ranch life. He has no intention of repeating that lesson. When Olivia steps from the train, offering to be his substitute bride, his answer is a resounding ‘no thanks.’ But Olivia isn’t about to take no for an answer and makes her way to the ranch, determined to prove she is the answer to his prayers.

What will it take for these two to overcome the barriers to their love?

Click here to get your copy!

My Thoughts:

The two lovebirds in this story were quite a pair. Though they fought their feelings for one another long and hard, they were quite tenacious and stubborn. Both of them needed to let go of the past to embrace their future.

It all started out as Rily Shannon began writing to a Sylvia to work on an agreement with her to become his mail-order bride in a marriage of convenience at first, but eventually to have children. What happens next throws Riley for a loop, and he digs in his stubborn heels and fights at the inevitable anyway.

What happened next? Well, a different bride comes instead. Olivia, seeking a new start from her hometown and broken heart, agrees to take Sylvia's place as Sylvia has made other plans. One problem is that Riley did not receive the letter explaining this change. Well, no thank you he basically says as he takes one look at Olivia and knows she is a rich girl. Already Riley had his heart broken by one before and he did not think Olivia would be the bride he was looking for now. So, he left her and her man servant at the station.

Well, then Olivia does the unexpected as she has guts and gumption a mile wide. She hires a wagon and goes to Riley's cabin, makes herself to home, and promises to prove herself a worthy wife. This was certainly a battle of the wills and an interesting courtship between these two who were so set in their opinions. It was fun to watch.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

About the Author

Linda Ford is a multi-published author who makes her home in rural Alberta, Canada where she is near enough to the Rockies to see them every day. She didn’t always want to be an author. In fact, she dreamed of running an orphanage. In a way, her dream came true. She married a rancher. They had four children then adopted ten, an experience which has given her much fodder for the happy-ever-after stories she writes. Growing up on the prairie and learning to notice the small details it hides has given her an appreciation for watching God at work in His creation. Her upbringing also included being taught to trust God in everything and through everything—a theme that resonates in her stories.

Mail-Order Bride Substitute is her 100th title.

More from Linda

For the most part, I write westerns.  Historical western romances to be exact. Now I’m not a cowgirl. I don’t even ride horseback. (Shh. Don’t tell anyone.) So, you might well ask, what qualifies me to write stories of this era and these kinds of people?

Well, I could list a number of reasons. 1) I had a father who liked to visit museums and tell stories about settling the west. Not only that, but for a few summers when I was very young, my mother and my siblings accompanied him to live in a…well, the best way to describe it is to say it was a cabin on wheels with nothing inside but a few cupboards and rough bunk beds. You could say I experienced pioneer life firsthand albeit it through the eyes of a child 2) As a child, I read anything I could get my hands on, including Zane Grey. I fell in love with his heroes, his heroines and his settings. 3) I dated and married a man who lives to watch westerns. And as a good date and later, a good wife, I spent many hours watching them. 4). I still love those larger-than-life heroes (aka cowboys) and the stubborn but kind heroines.

Mail-Order Bride Substitute is the third in a 5-book (and counting) series of Montana Mail-Order Brides. I like creating families and have done exactly that in this series. There are four brothers—the Shannons–and then their friends who see how successful their marriages are and decide to try this mail-order bride business for themselves.

I tend to create strong families and this series is no exception. Mrs. Shannon was a kind, guiding mother. Mr. Shannon was tough as old leather yet fair. Their sons do their best to honor them. I also prefer settings that include mountains which is why I have set this series in beautiful western Montana.

I love these stories. Or maybe it’s the cowboys and the brides who gather their courage around them to travel west to marry—and yes, tame—these young men.

Incidentally, this is my 100th book to be published.

My Thoughts and More on The Lieutenant's Secret Love by Elva Cobb Martin

About the Book

Book: The Lieutenant’s Secret Love

Author: Elva Cobb Martin

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: April 11, 2023

An exposed family secret changed her life forever and blindsided his Marine heart.

From the day Hannah was abandoned as a newborn, her adoptive parents have kept the truth of her origin from her and her siblings. But when that secret is exposed, a threat arises which forces her to leave the only family she’s ever known and the adoptive brother she adores. She must start her life anew in Charleston.

U.S. Marine Lieutenant Adam White, harbors a secret—more confidential than patrolling the Caribbean for French corsairs, more threatening than the fight against Barbary pirates in the Mediterranean. Adam carries a personal, burning secret in his heart. He’s fallen in love with Hannah since discovering she is not his blood sister. And the thought that she might only ever see him as her loving big brother may be the greatest threat to him yet.

As the Charleston men seek to win Hannah’s heart, she never loses touch with the man who had been her older brother. The man her heart can’t help seeing him in a whole new light. But when Adam’s squadron sets out for the Mediterranean on the most dangerous mission of his life, only God can keep him—and their love—alive.

My Thoughts:

This was quite a drama rich story of two young people who have known one another all their lives. They grew up as brother and sister, even though they are not blood related at all. The beginning of the story tells us how Hannah was abandoned to die as a newborn, and how her adoptive family found her on the side of the road and took her in. Now many years later, she is now sixteen, the story of her true parentage comes to light. Due to unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances, Hannah must now go away to Charleston to live with her aunt, for her own safety. But that it will be a beneficial trip is for certain. Not only will she be invited to social events, but she will be able to hone her healing skills at her aunt's tutelage.

Meanwhile, Adam (whom she thought was her brother), is also coming to this knowledge that his sister is not his sister. Well, that only begins his looking at her differently and his feelings of guilt at those feelings. But he cannot dwell on those thoughts all the time as he is a lieutenant in the US Navy. His secret missions keep him quite busy, and his correspondence with Hannah only begs her more questions about his work and his acquaintances.

This was an interesting love story that delves into complicated feelings about two people who wish to be so much more to one another than what they were. It also is an adventure filled novel of history, unscrupulous men, secret missions, and much swashbuckling.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

More from Elva

Researching our true American history for this novel inspired me so much in a day when many are trying to ignore or wipe out our Christian foundations and heroic acts. I want to share two particular true stories which I use in my novel that should bless and inspire you, too.

First, I set my story the year after President George Washington died. He died December 14, 1799, after a bout of laryngitis following a horseback ride in the snow to check his plantation. But truly, his death was brought on by the horrid bleeding (phlebotomy) common in that day that three prominent physicians put him through. History records they bled eight quarts from his body in about thirteen hours. The physicians soon observed… “that he expired without a struggle.” –Of course he couldn’t struggle, with all that blood loss. I’ve told you this to tell you Washington’s last words.

Washington, at about eleven o’clock in the evening, uttered his last words: “Father of mercies, take me unto thyself,” and “tis well.”

On Washington’s tomb at Mount Vernon is engraved: “I am the Resurrection and the Life; saith the Lord. He that believeth in Me, though he were dead yet shall he live. And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.”

The Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., which is 555 feet tall, has engraved on its metal cap the Latin phrase “Laus Deo,” which means “Praise be to God.”

The other true story of our history that inspired me proves the bravery and derring-do of the fledging Navy and Marines during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. Many don’t know that Washington actually disbanded the original Navy right after the Revolution as he had no intention of putting this almost penniless new nation into any more wars or try to find the money to support a Navy.

But Barbary Muslim pirates in the Mediterranean started plundering our merchant ships no longer under British protection and taking entire crews into slavery. We ended up paying huge sums of tribute for questionable protection and hefty ransoms to redeem any of our crews taken into slavery. President Thomas Jefferson saw the great need for a strong Navy and went about securing it during his two terms (1801-.1809). A famous byword of those days became: “Millions for defense, not a cent for tribute.”

Naval heroes like William Eaton, Edward Preble, Stephen Decatur, and Marine lieutenant Presley O’Bannon blazoned across our history during the turbulent wars against the Muslim Barbary pirates and sultans. One incident stands out that I decided to include in my novel with my fictional hero, Marine Lieutenant Adam White, added to the story and my heroine Hannah, awaiting letters from him.

Jefferson and Congress commissioned the building of a Navy frigate, the USS Philadelphia, the largest, most modern for the period, to do battle in this Barbary war. America was proud of this ship and it’s potential. But to everyone’s dismay, the Philadelphia got stuck on a sand bar near Tripoli’s harbor, and soon ended up captured by the Tripoli pirates, and its crew taken into slavery. Even though the American captain damaged the ship as best he could before being forced to surrender it, the horror was compounded when the Muslims bragged they would soon repair the ship and use it against us. President Jefferson, Congress, the Navy, and all America suffered some dark days indeed.

But naval hero Stephen Decatur came up with a daring, dangerous plan to slip into the well-guarded Tripoli Harbor where the ship was anchored while being repaired. He chose a few handpicked Marines (my novel hero included!) who would attempt to burn the Philadelphia and keep it from ever being used against us. They would have no Navy backup and would all end up in slavery if the Muslims discovered them.

You’ll have to read my novel (or do research) to find out how this ended!

My Thoughts:
This is a very cute story about a cat, Aqua Paws, that loves the water and goes out on it with his best friend, a turtle whose name is Purple Beak. These two unlikely friends like to go hunting treasures in the water and while hunting they pick up any litter as well. They also enjoy just playing in the water.
Aqua Paws is pretty fearless except for one thing, crabs. He is terrified of them pinching him, and when he goes deep down under the water, he sees a big one. What is he to do especially when he finds himself in a precarious position?
This book is beautifully and brightly illustrated. Aqua Paws is adorable, and I like that almost on every page there is a little crab following him around. It reminds mee of another beloved children's book series. This story will help kids to learn not to litter, maybe even help out cleaning it up, and to face their fears. Maybe just maybe what you feared will become your greatest ally.
I was provided a copy of this book by the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

My Thoughts:

This story continues the lives of the Eliason family, and this is John Mark's story. He is the second son, and he has moved to another town, Poplar Springs, to be their deputy sheriff. However, this town is nothing like his hometown, this one is much more lawless. He would like to help make this town safer for all, but that is difficult when the ones in charge are the enemies and thrive on injustice. So, John Mark will do all he can even if that leads him to rescuing a young woman from her horrid circumstances and marrying her.

Hannah Bane has been unloved and rejected by all who should have loved her, her entire life. She prays for an escape especially since everything she has tried ended up costing her more. When John Mark proposed to her on the street one day, she wonders if this is the escape she has been praying for. Can she and John Mark have a home and come to love each other one day? There is only one way to find out, and she is going to take it.

This was a story of pursuing new beginnings even in the face of the unknown. Of sacrificial love and a family built on necessity. And true friends that may not have been who you picked at first, but their hearts are gold. I look forward to continuing this series of the Eliason family.

More from Penny

A handsome deputy sheriff.

A woman in search of freedom.

An unconventional situation.

These three statements sum up the faith, tender romance, and plentiful humor found on the pages of Dreams of the Heart.

Some highlights during the writing of this book:

  • I conducted a lot of research on sheriffs because John Mark, one of the main characters, is a deputy sheriff in the small and lawless fictional town of Poplar Springs in 1894.

  • Many of us have heard of famous Old West lawmen such as the Earp brothers (Kansas, Texas, and Arizona), Doc Holliday (Arizona), and Pat Garrett (New Mexico). In my research, I also learned of a Wyoming Territorial sheriff named Christopher Castle who, with his deputies, noted the amount of money an outlaw had in his pocket when arrested. Later, when a fine was assessed, it was that exact amount.

  • A fun fact: some of the duties for Old West sheriffs included keeping the peace, collecting taxes, issuing liquor licenses, keeping the streets clear of dead animals, and cleaning up manure.

  • There is a brief Wild West shootout in Dreams of the Heart inspired by an historical Wyoming character’s experience.

  • John Mark carries a Colt Peacemaker revolver. While writing the book, I accidentally typed in “Colt Pacemaker”. Glad I caught it, although I’m sure it would have given my editors a laugh.

  • John Mark’s favorite cookie, the sugar cookie, is believed to have its origins in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and was named the “Nazareth cookie”. Enjoy the following recipe for the cookies mentioned in the book.

***

Lydie’s Sugar Cookies

Combine the following:

½ c. butter

1 c. sugar

1 egg

¼ c. milk

½ tsp. vanilla

2 tsp. baking powder

2 c. flour

Roll out on floured board with rolling pin and use cookie cutters.

Bake at 325° for 8-10 minutes.

My Thoughts and More on Love Again by Ann Marie Bryan

About the Book

Book: Love Again

Author: Ann Marie Bryan

Genre: Christian fiction (Romance)

Release date: December 8, 2022

Sometimes, all you need is a second chance at love.

Let the adventure begin …

Rylan McIntosh was twenty-three years old when Savannah McKenzie shattered his world. Everything was almost perfect … until she disappeared. Nearly seven years later, Savannah stands before him with not a hint of remorse. The naive young girl is gone and the woman in her place is at the top of her game. She’s all glam in a tailored suit, acting like they were nothing more than mere acquaintances. But she’s forgotten something—how relentless he can be.

Having experienced more than her fair share of tragedy, the last thing Savannah wants is to contend with Rylan. Back then, she’d surrendered to her feelings for him and conceded to his request for a relationship … well, until she was forced to flee. Seeing Rylan again stirs up buried memories she has no intention of reviving.

All bets are off as they battle through the hurt and pain of their shared past. Savannah begs for a truce and, surprisingly, Rylan agrees. That’s until he discovers a web of secrets and lies that run deeper than he could have ever imagined. Still, some connections are too powerful to ignore. Will Rylan and Savannah develop the courage to leave the past behind? Will they allow God to restore what has been broken?

Standalone books in the McIntosh Brothers series:

Book 1 – Dream Again (The story of Carter McIntosh & Gianna Barrett)

My Thoughts:

Love Again brings us back to the lives of the McIntosh brothers and this story focuses on Rylan the youngest. He and his brothers run a very successful business, he is attractive, and all the women want to be with him, life is looking pretty good. Or it should be. Rylan is happy for his brother's upcoming nuptials; he just cannot seem to find the right wife for himself. Or he found her, and she left his life unexpectedly, without explanation, and no contact seven years ago. Savannah was the one he loved and the one he wanted to marry. But she hurt him deeply when she ran away. He has never received closure.

Savannah is now a successful businesswoman doing her best to move forward without looking back. She has had many blessing in her life, and those she tries to keep focus on, not the heartbreaks. But when her business comes into business with Rylan's, well drama is going to unfold and pretty quickly.

Savannah is keeping some major secrets and Rylan better hold on to his hat. The time for the truth to be revealed has come, and I don't think anyone is prepared for the consequences.

This was a great drama rich story that deals with family and lost love, second chances, and new beginnings. Rylan tries so hard to be the tough guy, but there were a few instances where my heart just broke for him. And Savannah, well she was dealing with feelings a lot of women have had to deal with at one time or another. These two needed one another and God's love to put them back together. I can't wait for older brother Pax's story.

More from Ann Marie

I am thankful that you are a part of this amazing Love Again tour. It was a pleasure to write Love Again, the highly anticipated second installment in the McIntosh Brothers Series. Intensely emotional yet beautifully romantic, Love Again is a deeply moving story about faith, courage, a second chance at love… and what it really means to be a family.

In this novel, you’ll witnessed the growing relationship between Rylan McIntosh and Savannah McKenzie as they deal with the pain of the past and develop the courage to leave it all behind. While romance and drama are happening in this novel, the central message is to stay the course as you pursue your purpose.

I pray Love Again strengthens your faith in the Lord, and that you will be “… confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Philippians 1:6 (NKJV). God has a way of moving through time to ensure that all things work for our good. Whatever season you’re in, may God continue to bless and keep you.

Thank you for touring with me and for taking the time to read Love Again. Stay victorious.

My Thoughts and More on Tactical Force by Lynn Shannon

Some wounds never heal.

As a former Navy SEAL, Walker Montgomery faces danger without flinching. But not even a combat zone halfway around the world was far enough to escape the trauma of his teen years. His younger sister was murdered and the killer never caught. Since returning home, he’s been quietly working the case, unable to move on with his life until justice is served. She’s a survivor. Hayley Barlow has her own tragic childhood. Abducted and held captive, she barely escaped the clutches of the same killer that murdered Walker’s sister. The invisible scars on her heart and the brand on her shoulder are souvenirs she can’t get rid of. When Hayley receives a taunting phone call from her attacker, she turns to Walker for help. A race to stop a killer. Walker is committed to safeguarding Hayley, but their closeness fractures the walls surrounding his heart. As the killer draws them into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, nothing is as it seems. Walker is used to taking the fight to the enemy, but this time, with Hayley’s life on the line, it may cost him more than he’s willing to lose.

My Thoughts:

What do you do when you were kidnapped by a serial killer who killed your friend in front of you when you were still in high school? Well, you get trained in the Army and pursue a career in law enforcement. At least that is what Hayley Barlow did until a recent injury sidelined her. Now ten years later, coming back to her hometown had never been part of her plan, but her mother passed away and she has some personal matters to take care of. Little did she know that her coming back home would reawaken her abductor's appetite.

Walker's sister was murdered and his girlfriend, Hayley was kidnapped. Even though they broke up, Walker was not going to stop looking for the murderer. He does not believe the killer stopped, in fact he is convinced he has been abducting and killing women all this time. But how can he connect the dots? Also, he will do anything to keep Hayley safe as he still has very strong feelings for her. Can they reawaken their romance and dreams after Cassanova is brought to justice? Maybe if he survives. Hayley is not the only one Cassanova wants, he wants Walker to play his sick game too.

This was a riveting page turner that kept me up late into the night and I woke up early just to get back to the story. I did not figure out who Cassanova was, there were plenty of suspects to choose from. The first few opening pages was a bit creepy, but they really set the atmosphere for the life and death race Hayley and Walker find themselves in against this very obsessed killer. I wanted to keep the lights on! This is number six in a series but can definitely be read as a standalone. This is also the first book I have read by author Shannon, and I will be taking a look at what I have been missing in this entire series.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
