My Thoughts:
I have read my fair share of WWII books in the past, and I am always amazed when I pick one up that features a different place than just what was going on in Europe. This war, a world war, was massive and affected the whole world and what was happening was dark and evil. Sometimes I am not sure I understand the scope of that. In this story we visit Burma and the attack on its land and people as the Axis power of Japan sweeps across the countryside. Even in the deepest mountains, war came affecting all of humankind.
This story is about Kailyn, Kai for short, daughter of American missionaries. When we first meet her, she is likened to a tiger, especially due to the color of her eyes. Unfortunately, right in the first pages her mother dies, leaving her once loving father to raise a young girl while dealing with his own grief and continuing on with the mission he has been given. So, Kai has grown up among the natives with a distant father, not really fitting in anywhere. We see her inner turmoil as she tries to process the life she has been dealt with and the faith in God she has been taught. It is not an easy road for Kai.
Enter Ryan a young missionary who comes to work for Kai's father when she is eighteen and right before the Japanese descend on their world. Ryan has enough doubts on his own, but he is a genuine kind and caring man. If only Kai would open up to him, or just listen to him.
I felt a tumult of emotions as I read this story. I have read plenty of missionary stories and the hardships they face, especially with the old beliefs and customs. This seemed even more difficult as war was pressing in on all sides. Both of my grandfather's fought in WWII, one in Germany the other against Japan. Neither talked of their experiences sadly, but I could almost picture my grandfather as one of the American soldiers.
What an interesting time and place and people this story told about. Told in two parts, this story took an interesting twist I was not expecting. The cover is beautiful and unusual, and the title thought provoking.
