Review: Shadowed Loyalty by Roseanna M. White

About:

Sabina Mancari never questioned her life as the daughter of Chicago’s leading mob boss until bullets tear apart her world and the man she thought she loved turns out to be an undercover Prohibition agent. Ambushes, bribes, murder, prostitution—all her life, her father sheltered her from his crimes, but now she can no longer turn away from the truth. Maybe Lorenzo, the fiancé who barely paid her any attention in the last two years, has the right idea by planning to escape their world. But can she truly turn her back on her family?

All his life, Lorenzo’s family assumed he would become a priest, but he has different ideas—marrying Sabina and pursuing a career in the law. Despite his morals, he knows at the core he isn’t so unlike his mafiosi father and brothers. Has he, in trying to protect Sabina, forced her into the arms of the Prohibition agent bent on tearing her family apart? How can they rebuild what has so long been neglected and do it in the shadow of the dark empire of the Mafia?

Shadowed Loyalty, set amid the glitz and scandal of the Roaring Twenties, examines what love really means and how we draw lines between family and our own convictions, especially when following one could mean losing the other.

My Thoughts:

I always enjoy an author White story and this was no exception, even though it was a little bit different. This time we are introduced to a crime family, one of the mafia families to be exact. This was the story of Sabina, the daughter of the crime lord and her fiancé, Lorenzo, also with ties to the family. The time era is the early 1920's, prohibition is strong, and sometimes the "good" guys were just as corrupt as the bad guys.

I found the history interesting. The author dives into why the mafia rose up and a lot of it had to do with the old world from which they came. Their corruption was high and the police were mostly corrupt. In America, though, they had a new beginning but unfortunately that meant that some of the old ways of doing business were brought to this new country. As they were hard to break.

Sabina as we meet her in the beginning is a very naive and confused young woman. She knows what her family is, she just didn't understand or know of all the less than noble businesses and occupations they were involved in. She is also confused in her love life. Right away she is betrayed by the man she loves, yet she was engaged to another, Lorenzo, for years.

Lorenzo was our hero. He knows full well what Sabina and his family is capable of. He doesn't want any part of it. He wants to begin anew with Sabina without the mafia ties. However their tale and journey to eventual marital bliss is going to take some time. Especially as Lorenzo will now need to deal with Sabina's betrayal. And one lesson they both will learn, is just because you want nothing to do with the family business, the family will still have it's hold on you.

This was a great inside read of what it might look like to live in a family that is close-knit and loving, and yet is the mafia. I enjoyed this novel immensely.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
