My Thoughts:

This was an interesting dual timeline story that interconnected with unknown family ties. I liked that the first story line took place in the 1950's, for whatever reason I am intrigued by that time era. The rebuilding after the wars, etc. The setting also really takes you away, especially for me, as I have yet to visit these National parks that author Barnett so expertly describes in her stories.

There are some hard parts about losing one's child and the grief that accompanies that. That is the first couple's struggle and then they find an abandoned newborn, which raises all kinds of questions as this mystery unfolds.

The second storyline was just as interesting. Especially as Talia begins to question the methods the company she works for makes their sports clothing. This really hit home as far as the poisons that could be in our clothing that we wear. Very interesting stuff.

All in all, this was a pretty good read, tying up the past with the present, allowing our characters to grow in their faith journeys.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

My Thoughts:

This was a sweet book that contains three mail order bride stories. Amelia Mayberry takes matchmaking quite seriously. She thoroughly checks out each individual to make sure only good people make the cut.  She is all about romance, she loved her husband dearly and would like for all that want to have a love life of their own.

In the first story we have Annika traveling a long way from her twin sister to meet her matched beau. What she walks into surprises her very much. What if the man matched for her is not exactly who she thought he was? What if someone else is her more perfect match? What can she do when she is matched to one brother, but falls in love with the other?

The second story deals with a prodigal son and his surprise marriage to save an intended bride's reputation. This was a fun one that has a somewhat action-packed flair to it. A mail order bride forced to marry another due to keeping her reputation intact was my kind of story.

And last but not least, the one who started it all, Amelia will finally meet her match. Not something she ever planned for. She was happy to be a matchmaker for life; she never even considered she might have a second chance at love herself. Especially when she goes herself to right a wrong due to a match that had less than desired consequences. What if the match only wants to be matched with her?

This was a sweet set of novellas to lose yourself into for awhile.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

Bringing a Swedish Christmas to the American West

By Carrie Turansky

In my novella, A Trusting Heart, part of the Christmas Mail-Order Brides Collection, Annika Bergstrom, who is originally from Sweden, leaves her home in Chicago and travels to the rugged Wyoming Territory in 1880 to marry a man she’s never met. Though she carries only a small trunk, she brings with her something far more meaningful—cherished Christmas traditions from her homeland.

Swedish Christmas celebrations begin early with the first Sunday of Advent. Annika remembers her mother lighting a candle each week leading up to Christmas, filling their home with warmth and anticipation. In her new Wyoming home, she lights a candle, longing for connection and clinging to faith and hope as she begins this new chapter of life.

December 13 brings one of the most beloved Swedish traditions—St. Lucia Day. In Sweden, the youngest daughter dresses in a white gown with a red sash and wears a crown of candles, waking her family with coffee and saffron buns. Annika lovingly bakes these sweet rolls with her intended’s daughter, hoping it will draw them all closer.

As Christmas Eve—Julafton—arrives, Annika prepares a modest version of a Swedish smörgåsbord: roasted ham, root vegetables, and creamy rice pudding. She hides an almond in the pudding, smiling as everyone at the table eagerly searches their bowls. According to Swedish tradition, the one who finds the almond will marry in the coming year. Laughter and joy fill the room, and Annika feels a growing sense of belonging with her new family.

Swedish traditions add depth and richness to A Trusting Heart, reminding us that wherever we go, the light of Christmas can shine brightly—especially when carried by a trusting heart.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading Christmas Mail-Order Brides which includes three novellas: The Prodigal Groom by Vickie McDonough, A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky, and Mrs. Mayberry  Meets Her Match by Susan Page Davis. Each heartwarming story that will transport you back to a joyful, old-fashioned Christmas.

My Thoughts on A Song in the Dark by Kimberley Woodhouse

About:

Her music captivates crowds. His mission exposes secrets. Their courage defies a dictator.

Against the simmering backdrop of impending war, blind virtuoso pianist Chaisley Frappier embarks on a concert tour through a rapidly changing Europe. When she learns that Hitler's regime of injustice is targeting other disabled people, Chaisley realizes she is in a prime position to help those who are threatened reach safety. But the Führer's growing fascination with the celebrated musician endangers her undercover mission and forces her to walk a tightrope between her fame and her calling.

When Rick Zimmerman receives his next assignment from the British Secret Intelligence Service, he is surprised to learn he'll be acting as the personal driver of a world-renowned pianist as she tours Europe. The role gives him the perfect cover to complete missions of sabotage and intelligence-gathering, but he soon suspects the brilliant, alluring pianist has secrets of her own. As Chaisley and Rick confront evil at every turn, it will take every bit of faith and courage they possess to triumph over hate--and survive.

My Thoughts:

This is the second story that brought both World Wars into a linking of time and place that I have read this year. This story deals with Chaisley Frappier a gifted piano player, who was blinded as a child. Our ML is Rick Zimmerman, of the British Secret Intelligence Service, who goes undercover acting as her driver.

Chaisley and her dearest friend Melanie want to do all they can to help those who are being targeted in Hitler's rule. The Jewish people and those with disabilities, the ones he deems unworthy. The challenges and atrocities that they face moves Chaisley and Melanie to do all that they can to help those in need, even at the cost of their own lives.

Rick picks up their fervor and is more determined than ever to help bring down this regime and protect the girls as much as he possibly can. Especially since Chaisley's talent puts her in the sights of Hitler himself. Her blindness, though, could lead her to her death.

I very much enjoyed reading about such courage and faith while dangerous mounting circumstances piled up against them. These characters did all they could even when they had no control of the outcome. They could only do their part and do it the best they could. Even blindness would not hold Chaisley back. Great story of standing up and doing the right thing no matter what. I also appreciated the author's notes and saw her heart poured into this story.

My Thoughts:

Pilar Alonso is having a really bad day. Oh, and what an unusual pretty name Pilar is, I really liked it. On to the story, she is having a really bad day as she wakes up tied up and blindfolded. Author Mentink really knows how to throw the reader into the story from the first pages. I never know what kind of trauma or drama I will be stepping into when I pick up one of her books and I enjoyed the uniqueness of this one.

Pilar was just going about her day trying to figure out how to pay some of her bills and taking care of her ailing father, when bam, a bullet goes through her windshield. She needs help and fast.

Chase Wolfe and Pilar don't exactly get along. However, he happens to be the guy that has an uneasy feeling and along with his dog, they go to find her. This begins another edge of your seat thriller with a dash of romance between two unlikely people and their life-or-death situation they find themselves in. I really enjoyed this installment of this series with strong family connections and lovable search and rescue dogs.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

About the Author

More from Dana

Those bloodhounds are galloping on through this Security Hounds series, aren’t they? Here in book #5, we have Chase and the unbelievably chill Tank. They couldn’t be more opposite. Tank is the kind of dog who only leaves his sunny napping spot when there’s an urgent need to do so. Chase is an energetic, unrestrained, human who gets caught up in the life of the reserved Pilar, a cello player who is simply trying to earn a few extra dollars when her delivery van is forced off the road and she’s kidnapped. That’s only the beginning of the adventure. I hope you will enjoy Tank, who falls deeply in love with Pilar’s cello music, and Pilar and Chase, who definitely got off on the wrong foot when they first met. And what is the object the killer is desperate to get his hands on? Hope you enjoy the ride!

My Thoughts:

This was a story of second chances and dreams realized all wrapped up in a story of forgiveness, letting go, and love. I never like to read about divorces in my fictional stories. I know, I know, that is life, but there is always a sadness and a sort of disconnect I have with them. However, this story is different. The couple are divorced after a miscarriage that tore them apart for various reasons, but they get a second chance at love. At starting over and loving and forgiving each other, healing their marriage, and cherishing the little girl that needs them so much.

They will need to work hard and come to understandings. Their dreams also look a bit different than before, but it was such a joy to read of their maturity and growth and looking at life through different lenses. I cheered Audrey and Tyler on, and with the help of Audrey's aunt, I knew they had the best support for a happily ever after outcome. I am pro-marriage and so happy this fictional couple got theirs's back.

My Thoughts:

Infused with humor and good advice, author Friscea gives us her honest to goodness story of her struggles with all the things that accompany menopause. It felt a lot like sitting down with a good friend and just talking things out. I appreciated the straightforwardness of the book and the author's humor that helped lighten up the sometimes ridiculousness of being a woman. Reminding us that this too shall pass.

This is by no means a doctor's opinion, just one woman's journey as she walked this stage of life and all the joys and trials it brought. This is a very informational book that I will be keeping on my shelf to use as a guide and some help, even to know what to ask my doctor. Thank you for writing this helpful and humorous guidebook.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

About the Author

Sally Friscea writes with humor to give hope to the longing heart. As a former member of the US Army, she found herself on an ISIS kill list but is now trying to live a quieter life after marrying for the first time at the age of fifty.

She weaves hope and humor into nearly every story. She is a multi-genre and award-winning writer. She has completed two children’s picture books and an adult murder-suspense novel based around the Kennedy Space Center awaiting publication. She also enjoys shorter works of fiction and articles.

Currently, Sally is working on subsequent novels for the murder-suspense series, a speculative dystopian novel about the aftermath of a second civil war, and other projects that reflect her diverse background.

She’s the Social Director of the Florida Christian Writers Conference and the president of Word Weavers International’s Brevard Chapter. When she’s not bookkeeping, budget counseling, or writing, Sally enjoys spending time with family and friends, scrapbooking, and doing crafts, some of which she sells on Etsy.

More from Sally

I didn’t know it was hot flashes for the first five years. I thought the air-conditioning was broken everywhere I went, because it was. At my house in Florida, my bedroom at the end of the line sizzled. At the office, the unit that fed my room was down; I relied on the trickle of AC from the main room. And my car fritzed often enough, so I didn’t notice it was hot flashes until a friend’s husband mentioned her “crazy pills” at their house one night. She explained they were for hormones and how awful she’d been before taking them.

When she mentioned hot flashes, the light bulb went off. My mother never said anything about suffering from menopause, and the only person I’d ever known to talk about any of it used to break out an oriental fan when the flashes happened, but she was in her fifties, therefore, I didn’t connect the dots in my early forties. All the older ladies at scrapbooking said my sleep issues were menopause, but again, I was too young for that. Then I learned it’s happening about a decade earlier than in previous generations.

When I complained to a friend at the Florida Christian Writers Conference about my perimenopausal symptoms and my great ignorance, she told me I should write a book and put all my humor into it. I spent the next few months taking notes and decided that I indeed had enough material for a book. My dystopian book in progress got pushed aside, and I started down the rabbit hole of finding answers for myself and compiling a useful tool for others walking blindly on the path of menopause.

I found some existing books using humorous personal stories and others addressing symptoms by using medical speak, but nothing with both, so I married the two and tried to dumb it down in a way that even I would understand. I threw in the humor to make the reader know they are not alone. I addressed those pesky symptoms using pharmaceutical, holistic, and over-the-counter treatments where available to appease all the ladies.

As I wrote the book, I kept finding that how we live our forties determines our fifties, our fifties determine our sixties, and so on, subsequently addressing food and other obstacles to longevity. I wrote this book because most women don’t want to talk about this topic, and most doctors aren’t trained in the field of aging women.

I found that even women who don’t suffer greatly will still submit to the effects down the road with osteoporosis and heart disease, because of the diminishing hormones. I attempted to cast as wide a net as possible by writing it in a way to entertain as well as inform so the reader can advocate for herself with her doctors and learn how to avoid spiraling out of physical independence in the latter years. This book is the sugar coating on a hard topic not being talked about enough. I wrote it so you won’t have to talk about it outside your physician’s office.

My Thoughts:
Aesop's Fables are timeless little stories that capture important life lessons in a concise and rather clever way. This storybook brings those same life lessons in a more modern way. With everyday language and modern pictures, this book and these stories show their timeless quality that continues to teach and inspire all of us.
This is a fun book, some of the pictures almost look like paintings and some of them can be a little bit intense, especially the wolf one. However, that just shows the seriousness of the lying.  My kids always enjoyed these tales growing up and I know most others will too. This is a nice hardback storybook to add to your shelves.
