My Thoughts:

I have really been caught up in this series, and this third book focuses on Gaston Reid, once ranger and now sheriff, and the woman who has loved him since she was a girl, Lorna Elliot. Reid is still smarting that the woman he fell for in the second book, Belle, married someone else. But Belle and her husband's past and evil family have escaped and are coming for vengeance. Reid knows at once they are coming for Lorna. So, he sets himself up to be her personal guard.

Poor Lorna is trying to move on with her love life as a Harvey girl, especially since Reid has never shown any interest in her anyway. So, why is he so intent on being the one to protect her, and only him? And when Reid realizes he is in love with Lorna, hold on to your hats. This was a fun, swoony read full of danger and unrequited love and so many almost kisses that had me grinning from ear to ear. I so enjoyed the story of Lorna and Reid. This can be read as a standalone, but the whole series is really great to dive into.

Q: What is your favorite trope to read? Which of your books have that trope?

To name a few, I love stories about marriage of convenience, fake dating, mail-order brides, runaway brides, and enemies to lovers. In my books, I do have some of those tropes, but I adjust them to fit my story

I’d love to write an enemies-to-lovers trope in the future!

Q: Have you ever been asked to spice up, or down, a kissing scene? How did you do it?

For my May release, To Catch a Coronet, the editor challenged me to make the kissing scene longer and more romantic. Haha it took me my entire writing session that day to make the short scene two paragraphs longer in order to make the kissing more swoon-worthy, while still staying true to the level of affection I have in my books. With that critique in mind, I attempted to add a bit more “swoon” in The Enchanting of Miss Elliot as well.

Q: What historical novel has most impacted you? How?

Grace: I feel like every season, there is a novel that touches me. The one that stuck the longest has to be Tracie Peterson’s Westward Chronicles (a Harvey Girl series). They are moving, unique tales that inspired me to write my own Harvey Girls series! I re-read the Westward Chronicles every few years.

Q: How does your faith integrate into your writing in practical ways? 

Grace: No matter how subtle my theme or short the verses, my stories will always point the reader to the Lord. Usually, whatever I am personally learning spiritually while writing impacts my heroine/hero in some way.

For The Enchanting of Miss Elliot, the heroine, a firm believer, is despairing that God will not give her the desires of her heart and sets out to find a new future and a re-directing of her heart. It’s a very realistic struggle, and the reader can see through the story the beauty of trusting God in our daily walk and with our biggest dreams.

Q: What’s your life like outside of writing?

Grace: Besides reading at least one to two books a week, I love to take long walks to the park with my family, exercise on my bike, plan the family’s next travel adventure, and try new baking challenges. As a wife and mama of three, I usually have some happy recipients for the new recipe.

Q: Will there be more Harvey Girl books from you?

Grace: Yes! I am currently working on Book Four in the Aprons & Veils series, The Vanishing of Miss Victoria. It will release mid-2025.

My Thoughts:

The year is 1965 and Joann has a lot of decisions to make. The country is at war, her sister is getting married, and her father still doesn't trust her business sense in running the family store. Poor Joann has run herself ragged trying to show she is capable of taking over the store one day. However, she wrestles with some self-confidence and doubt especially when things become complicated and some of life's decisions are out of her control.

Then there is Nathan, her love. He is back from college to help run his family farm, and he is back for Joann. But Joann is having trouble trusting him when he says he is back for her. After all, he didn't want anything serious while he was in college and now, he is hitting at marriage. Where does this leave Joann? Will she ever be able to live out one of her dreams? I felt for her as she struggled, like a lot of women to be her own self while still wanting to have a marriage. Or will the war decide for her? Like Joann, do we really have any control at all?

Joann: Apron Strings Book 5 is part of the Apron Strings series, a multi-author project. When Jenny Knipfer, the organizer behind the project, approached me about joining the lineup of authors, I was immediately intrigued. An old cookbook passed down each decade to a new character? Small towns? Romance? Sign me up!

The books in this inspirational series are connected by one single cookbook, Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book, as it passes from character to character. The cookbook contains more than recipes. Through time, women have penned encouraging words, quotes, and scriptures in the margins. There are eleven books in the Apron Strings series—one for every decade from 1920 to 2020. My novel, Joann, takes place in the 1960s.

One of Joann’s specialties is a popular 60s favorite, Jello with Dream Whip. No recipe needed there. Another name for this should be Disappearing Blueberry Pound Cake, because that’s what happens when I make it! This cake has become a family favorite. As far as how Joann’s cooking attempts using Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book come out, you’ll have to read the novel to see. In the back of my novel there’s another recipe, one that would’ve appeared in Mrs. Canfield’s Cookery Book. All of the Apron Strings books have a recipe or two (or more) in the back.

Parts of Joann’s story are fun and lighthearted, but she also faces serious issues during uncertain times. I hope readers enjoy reading Joann, but also hope they come away from her story with a deeper understanding of the comfort that comes from trusting God with the future.

My Thoughts:

The year is 1891, and in that year the railroad is coming to Horizon, Idaho. Much to the chagrin of many and the eager anticipation of others. I found the historical context interesting, and much the same as today, progress will come whether we want it or not. The town was divided with all that the railroad would bring; more people which means more business and a more prosperous town. At the same time, it was going to negativity affect others, like Mae Sheperdson.

Mae's dreams are coming true. She has a loving family who has accepted her and her dream of being a teacher to the deaf children has finally been fulfilled. Everything she ever wanted is falling into place, until it isn't. The railroad is coming, and the school is in the way. I felt for Mae as she worked hard to get where she was and then almost overnight everything is upended.

Well, this is a romance, so who should she fall in love with but the son of the railroad magnate. Landon comes from a very wealthy family, who still controls much of his life. He is sent on a business trip by his father to build a railroad and he meets some resistance but also the woman of his dreams. How can Landon fulfill his father's mission without hurting Mae?  And what is really best for the town as a whole?

This story shows that shattered dreams can awaken new ones and old ways giving way for the new, can be a good plan after all. This is a story of change, which inevitably happens, but sometimes the outcome is even better than we could have imagined.

Sometimes the Lord answered multiple prayers all at once.

Mae Shepherdson faced her pupils and, using sign language, dismissed them from class and promised to see them early tomorrow morning.

The students signed back to her and Mae thought her heart would explode.

Her charges were learning.

And she was making a difference.

Each student had a different story. From the ones who came from a supportive and caring home; to the ones who’d been mistreated or were orphans; from those who struggled to learn to those who eagerly embraced every lesson; from the youngest to the oldest, and all those in between…all were thriving under the dedicated tutelage of Mr. and Mrs. Eddington and the Horizon School for the Deaf.

Mae’s heart warmed as she watched as the children bounded from their desks, waved, and one by one, left the classroom. All except Polly, whom Mae had asked to stay after class.

Polly remained at her desk, smiling as she drummed her fingers on the worn-out wood, causing a tap-tapping vibration.

Mae reached inside her own desk and retrieved a wrapped parcel before walking to Polly’s desk. “For you,” she signed.

Polly’s brown eyes lit and she reached for the parcel, opening it with all the enthusiasm a six-year-old could muster. Pulling out the dress, she stood and held it against herself for size.

The dress Mama made would fit perfectly.

Polly wrapped her thin arms around Mae’s neck. She then stepped back, brought her hand to just below her mouth, and signed, “Thank you.” Before allowing Mae a chance to respond, Polly scuttled from the classroom, and Mae knew the little girl would barely reach her room before trying on the dress.

God had answered Mae’s prayers in so many ways. He’d blessed her with a family who loved her; He’d led her to teach at the Horizon School for the Deaf; and He’d allowed her to do something big for the least of these.

My Thoughts:

Enya Shanahan is in a pickle. Her marriage has been annulled, and her no-good husband is gone. However, she is pregnant, and her family will not stand to have their name smeared. They do love her, but they will pull out all the stops not to ruin their reputation. So, again they seek the services of Bellamy, the young matchmaker. And lo and behold, he has someone who needs a wife really quick. That would be Captain Sullivan O'Brien.

Enya is not quite the woman Sullivan envisioned. She is much too beautiful and maddening. She has also been mistreated, and even though he is not the same man as her first husband, he must tread carefully in pursuit of her heart. And her heart he wants, her love given willingly. He falls first, but her rejection will hurt him even more than his scars.

Enya and Sullivan's romance was a beautiful picture of patience, kindness, and longsuffering. I understood Enya's hesitance, but Sullivan put his heart and soul out there. I really felt for him, his insecurities regarding his scars and the proof he showed over and over again that he was a good man. Theirs was not a smooth road but it was well worth the read.

My Thoughts:

Love in a time of war and the wedding dress that pulls them all together. This was a romantic trio of novellas that open these women's hearts to love above all, even when the news in the world is not so good. Will they choose second chances at love, one with the one she thought got away, one with someone she let go, and the other at a whole new life?

These stories take place in three different timelines and all in the shadow of a war. The wars were World War I, Word War II, and the Vietnam war. They also all took place in New York City. I liked how all of these stories showed the women living the best they could, and I enjoyed the pursuit of their heroes and their endearing love. This was a hope filled read in bad times that certainly caused me to be more thankful for my country and family. We are blessed.

My Thoughts:

This was a sweet story of the old giving away to the new. The year is 1912 in Colorado and horses and automobiles share the same streets. Grace Hutton is a woman that has come back home with a broken heart but a strong spirit after being part of a wild west show. From the very beginning, she becomes a part of the widow Dorrie's life and the hatmaker's, Dan Waite's.

Dan has come to town to help his widower father heal and get over his grief. Things don't look so good for his father, until two women, strangers themselves, pop in their lives.

With adventure, danger, and romance (maybe two), this is a story of the old west changing with the times and becoming more modern. I found that an interesting theme and have compared that to our present time as well. Time never stays still, and things are always changing.

Harley the Wonder Horse

 

He was a beautiful, chocolate-colored gelding with an easy gait, and my friend called him  Harley.

“Harley the Wonder Horse,” she said, bona fide Rocky Mountain breed. “Everybody loves him.”

I sure did after a day of riding up around Brush Hollow in the hills not far from my home.

It’s a very short trip via horseback to the fictional world of my characters in the Cañon City Chronicles. I knew Harley had to be in the next and final book in the series, Covering Grace.

Grace Hutton had been hanging around in my head for three years—ever since I wrote about the younger of her twin brothers, Cale (Book 4, A Change of Scenery). He talked about his sister who could out-ride any of the cast in the Selig-Polyscope flickers being filmed in and around Cañon City.

When the older (by a minute) twin, Hugh, got his own story (Book 5, Hope is Built), he also mentioned their little sister, Grace. How could they not, with her never-say-die approach to life, and stick-like-flypaper perseverance. When they were all growing up, she was never far behind the boys, showing she was just as good as they were.

Trouble was, she was better, and her skills earned her a place in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. That’s where she met Harley, and when she came home, he came with her.

And there you have it, the story-behind-the-story of Harley the Wonder Horse. Now understand that real-life Harley is not a trick-riding horse, but I have a long-time friend, Linda Scholtz, who is a real-life trick rider. I’ve watched her do some mighty fine stunts, so fine that she instructs would-be trick riders how to be real trick riders.

A few other things from my life play into this book, like the setting. Is there anywhere more beautiful than the Rocky Mountains as a storm blows in quicker than your breath? Or the aspens that shiver in the slightest breeze and pour gold down the gullies and ravines in autumn? And what of sitting before a crackling fire in the woodstove or fireplace as fall runs in ahead of winter?

Natasha D. Frazier fell in love with love around the age of twelve because of artists like Babyface, Boys II Men, Whitney Houston, and New Edition. Around sixteen when her mother purchased a romance novel and left it lying around the house untouched, Natasha read it and a spark for the written word had been ignited.

Natasha believes that writing is one of her purposes and contributions to the world. She feels accomplished when she can get a few words written and like blah when life gets in the way. My Thoughts:

This was a fun story, and one that actually took me by surprise as well. I will admit that the premise of this story is not one that I actually like in real life. I do not enjoy reality TV shows, and I do not watch them. Just from the commercials or clips that I do see, I find them very fake and ridiculous. Why would a bunch of people compete for a happily ever after with one person? How would this marriage work out and would it be true love? But I will say this was an enjoyable read and made me look at those shows a little bit differently. No, I still won't be watching them but maybe there is a gem or two hiding in them.

Gemma is competing against seven other women to win the farmer's hand in marriage. She has her reasons, and they are more desperate than selfish. Her older sister is suffering from a very rare disease that is fatal. She is just trying to make what little time they have left more bearable.

Colby is trying to save his farm. That is why he is trying to find a wife. He also would like to love again after letting go of the woman of his dreams years ago. Can he find a love like that and more with someone else?

Then there is Stone, Colby's best friend and foreman. He thinks Colby is nuts but will stand by his best friend and support him anyway. But can he keep his heart from getting entangled in it all?

There was a lot of meat to this story. At times it was funny, others serious, and sometimes quite swoony. What people will do for love and family is no laughing matter.

Can you imagine signing up to marry someone you’d never met? Neither had my heroine Gemma Breckenridge until it was her last resort. This thought is what propelled me to write The Farmer Takes a Wife.

In 2009, I came across a reality TV dating show where several women from the city were invited to test out farm life in hopes of gaining a proposal from a farmer at the end. That show was called Farmer Wants a Wife. Though most of the episodes made me cringe, I thought it was a fantastic plot for a book. Since I write both historical and contemporary romance, I strive to put modern spins in my historical novels and vintage threads through my contemporary novels. What better vintage thread to drop into a modern-day rom com than a marriage of convenience trope?

But I didn’t want it to be the average marriage of convenience trope. I wanted something fresh. So, I put a spin on it, which brought about another spin, and before I knew it the story was taking a twist every few chapters.

The Farmer Takes a Wife is nine years in the making. After I wrote the first draft, I put it away for several years as book contracts were offered. I’d pull it out every now and then, polish it a bit, and then put it away again. In 2020, one month before the Covid pandemic rocked our world, I had finally completed it. With many workplaces shutting down, publishing houses were hesitant to offer new contracts. So, again, the story sat in my computer. At the end of last year, I decided I’d release the book myself this spring, shocked and delighted when the reality show Farmer Wants a Wife made a comeback after all those years! And it’s so much better than original season.

Perfect timing? Here’s hoping!

My Thoughts:

I have not read a lot of books about Vikings, and this one takes place during their raiding while King Alfred ruled. So, in this story, we get to step back in time as the Saxon's are fighting for their freedom and their very lives against the Viking raiders. In the midst of the battles and betrayal, we have a couple who fall in love. 

Aisley met Brecc for the first time when she was just twelve and right before he and her father and brother went to stop the Viking takeover. What happens during that battle changes them all, especially for Aisley's family. Years later she and Brecc meet up again, Aisley as a talented healer and Brecc a much more seasoned warrior. They begin to have a budding romance when the Vikings descend upon the Saxons yet again.

If you are looking for a historical read to really delve into, this was a good one. I really appreciated the author's attention to detail of the times, the battles, and the titles, using some of the old vocabulary. I liked getting a history lesson, especially from the Saxons viewpoint and this story gives a glimpse of what it may have been like to live when the Vikings raided. War, betrayal, romance, and the willingness to fight for those you love are all threads found in this story.
